As Nationwide's Data Protection Officer and Head of Data Risk Oversight, this Senior role provides a compelling opportunity to lead a part of the Operational Risk Oversight team, supporting the Operational Risk Oversight Director, who reports directly to the Chief Risk Officer as part of the independent Second Line Risk function. Act as the Data Protection Officer for Nationwide; Provide strategic leadership of our Data Protection oversight agenda. They will work closely with the Business to ensure processing activities are known and assessed for risk and compliance. The Data Protection Officer provides the framework and Oversight for the first line to ensure compliance with existing and future Data Protection law. As the Head of Data Oversight; Oversight the collection,, processing, and governance of Data.
Support and challenge execution of the Data strategy which is influenced by the Chief Data Officer, Technology, and Business Units. Data has significant value and understanding and managing Data risk, control, and policy effectively is a critical part delivering services to customers.

Leading the Society wide approach to compliance with the Data Protection Act through effective framework implementation and Oversight. A Society wide RACI is in operation that dictates which department is directly accountable for completing required compliance activities.
Providing effective Oversight on operational activities and change initiatives within the Chief Data Officer sphere of accountability, such as the multi-year “Data Strategy”, and wider across the society; to ensure that data risks have been fully considered and agreed through appropriate governance. This will include data risks within; IT and Data Architecture, Analytics, Culture, and Governance.
Employing various approaches for DPO and Oversight which include “Close and Continuous” oversight, and undertaking risk and control based “formal oversight reviews”. This will support assessing business area compliance against the Enterprise Risk Management Framework (ERMF) requirements. The ERMF includes business and regulatory requirements on: risks, controls, policies, and scenario analysis.
Providing strategic leadership to your team in delivering its objective to provide assurance to executive management and the Board Risk Committee on the status of Data Protection Compliance, and the adequacy and effectiveness of risk management to mitigate key operational, legal, regulatory and conduct risks.
Maintaining high value relationships at Exco / Exco -1 level with a sufficient depth of understanding of their business area deliverables, priorities and risks. You will ensure that the key Data priorities and risks are sufficiently prominent and accounted for. Providing effective insight and presenting at risk and control governance forums/committee
Deputising for the Operational Risk Director and other senior members of the team as required
We’ll need you to have a demonstrable track record of risk and control leadership, within a Retail Banking/Financial Services firm, Professional Services or Regulator, coupled with expert knowledge of Data Risk e.g. Data Protection, Data governance, data architecture, IT solutions, Privacy, and change delivery. You may be a DPO, but as a minimum you will have experience of working within, or oversighting Data Protection and Governance Frameworks such as UK GDPR & Data Protection Act / DCAM.
With strong critical thinking, you’ll comprehend and assimilate information rapidly, break down complex problems and provide support and challenge to risk owners in a clear and understandable way to suit different audiences, from Board level through to wider colleague engagement.
