We are looking to recruit 1 x Band 7 HCPC-registered (or soon to be registered) Clinical Scientist - Bioinformatician to work within the North East and Yorkshire Genomic Laboratory Hub (NE&Y GLH) bioinformatics team.

A breakdown of the position available is given below:

  • 1 x permanent post based at Sheffield (Sheffield Diagnostic Genetics Service at Sheffield Children's NHS Foundation Trust)

Applications from final year Scientist Training Programme (STP) trainees in Clinical Bioinformatics and registered Healthcare/Clinical Scientists from other relevant disciplines are welcomed.

For those candidates who are not yet registered, they will be expected to work towards HCPC registration and would be appointed on a salary band appropriate for their experience.

Main duties of the job

The role responsibilities include:

  • To provide highly specialised bioinformatics expertise to support the diagnostic platforms being used within NE&Y GLH. This will include implementation of methods of data handling, analysis and interpretation of data that will ultimately have a direct impact on patient care.
  • To work within the NE&Y GLH virtual team based across the different NE&Y GLH sites to plan activities and develop the bioinformatics capability of NE&Y GLH.

Person Specification Qualifications and Training
  • 1st or 2nd class honours degree in Biological Science with a strong genetics component , or Bioinformatics or Computer Science
  • Registration as a Clinical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) (or sufficient appropriate evidenced experience to enable registration process).
  • Evidence of CPD (Continuous Professional Development)
Experience
  • Supervised in service experience.
  • Have worked with data from NGS.
  • Experience in Linux systems administration.
  • Experience of software development
  • Experience in high-dimensional data management and analysis
Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of statistical principles and tests.
  • Knowledge of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS).
  • Programming skills in a modern programming language such as PERL, Python or JAVA and the ability to work in a Unix/Linux environment and ability to recognise and advise on appropriate solutions for data analysis.
  • Information technology skills (hardware and software) relevant to large dataset manipulation e.g. archives, backups, networks and servers.
Personal Attributes
  • Ability to communicate complex ideas to non-specialists.
  • Manual dexterity and good hand eye co-ordination.
  • Self-confident but also able to work well as part of a team.
