United Kingdom DC Thomson Ltd. Full time

Connecting people to their family stories is special. We’re proud to deliver these magic moments. Through technology, data and insights, we bring people closer to their past, to benefit their future.

We’re a fast-growing team of smart people, on a mission to help millions. Solve meaningful, complex problems and be a part of something magical. Enjoy the agility of a scale-up with the security of real financial backing, in a place where every story matters.

Why join our Product Design team?

  • Our work has purpose — We help our customers better understand who they are and where they come from in the world through our products.
  • It’s meaningful — It’s a unique opportunity for a designer to come to work and solve genuine people problems through design on a daily basis.
  • Insight driven — We’re committed to making sure our product and backlogs are shaped by customer insight (qualitative and quantitative). In this role, you’d be responsible for turning that insight into brilliant products to help our customers create and share rich stories about their ancestry.
  • We develop people — We take development seriously. You’ll tailor your development to suit your goals and use our progression framework to help drive your career. You’ll have weekly 1:1’s with your manager to discuss career progression, opportunities to progress and you’ll have access to your own training budget.
  • We’re right sized — we’re not so small that we’ll ask you to take the bins out but we’re not so big that you your work won’t have impact. We’re backed by a private investor with a long term view, so we’re not chasing funding rounds or quarterly dividends.
  • We work in a remote-first way, combining the benefits of working from home with dynamic work hubs in London and Dundee.

You won’t find any bureaucracy here, but you will find:

  • Generous holiday allowance with the chance to buy more
  • A pension contribution that stands out in the market (9.5% matched company contribution with a 6% contribution from the employee’s side).
  • All the health and wellbeing benefits you’d expect and some you wouldn’t (Careers Page)
  • The chance to work with smart and fun people on products that will bring joy to millions.

About the Role:

We’re looking for a product designer with a track record of designing and shipping impactful work to customers to join our design team. In this role, you’ll work collaboratively and autonomously with Engineering, Data Science and Product on shared business and customer problems.

Here’s what the role involves:

  • Working autonomously to define problems, build, measure and iterate.
  • Setting the design vision for your team
  • Collaborating with other designers and our UX Engineering team to ensure our customers get the best experience.
  • Working with UX Research to interview and test your designs with users.

About you

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have extensive experience designing and shipping impactful products for consumer-facing tech or media companies.
  • Want to build amazing stuff which makes our customers happy.
  • Be outcome-focused, and autonomous.
  • Work in the open – sharing ideas and designs early and often.
  • Love solving problems and making sure that you are using your time to solve the right problems
  • A great communicator, with excellent critical thinking skills.
  • Facilitate workshops, bringing crossfunctional peers into the design process.
  • Be a team player who knows how to get the best out of your peers and use design to build consensus with team members and stakeholders.
  • Know how to gather and act on customer insight and use it to drive your design process.
  • Have experience of building and maintaining design systems

About the team:

  • We’re mostly in London – but some of us are in Scotland. We make time to come together to collaborate and hang out once a month as a team.
  • We’re an ambitious, growing team of designers, copywriters and researchers. We also have a small UX engineering team who sit with us to help manage our component library and speed up delivery.
  • You’ll probably read a lot of job descriptions about having fun at work, but we really mean it.
  • We make jokes – sometimes they’re funny

If this all sounds appealing, then get in touch. This could be the start of something special.

To apply for this role, please follow our online application process and submit a CV and cover letter.

This is a full-time, permanent position, working 37.5 hours per week remotely with some monthly team days in our London, Fleet Street Office. We offer a generous package including 26 Days Holidays + 8 Bank Holidays, health cash plan, corporate gym discounts, excellent pension, a competitive salary, and many more staff discounts and benefits.

We are an equal opportunity employer and encourage applications from everyone and do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, disability or any other protected characteristics.

If you have any issues with your application, please email recruitment@dcthomson.co.uk

Please note that we reserve the right to close the vacancy early once we have received suitable applications. Therefore, please ensure you submit your application as early as possible to avoid disappointment.
