The Opportunity

We have an opportunity for a Level 5 Civil Engineer Degree Apprentice to start in Summer / Autumn 2024 and join our water sector team based in Brighton .

Water is one of our most precious natural assets, and our work is key to helping provide innovative sustainable solutions that balance our environmental impact. You will be instrumental in helping to improve the water environment through our projects. Sustainability is key to our purpose, promise, and values and this role is a great fit for someone who is passionate about this and to responding to the impact of the climate emergency.

In your day-to-day work you will solve engineering problems, use design software and tools to carry out engineering calculations, develop designs, and produce drawings, reports, and presentations. You’ll be doing all this is as part of a friendly and collaborative project team along with the support and guidance of our highly skilled Senior Civil Engineers and Hydraulic Network Modellers.

As part of our Brighton water team, you can expect to be part of project teams working on:

Managing water resources and reservoirs

Producing high-quality drinking water for public supply

Distributing water for our communities

Protecting the natural environment from pollution

Alleviating flooding for local communities

Our team in Brighton work most closely with our local client, Southern Water, as the lead organisation in the Strategic Solutions Partner (SSP+) framework. We work in an integrated team with the client at solution identification stage, allowing our engineers to have the greatest impact on cost, sustainability and carbon. Our office, located in Brighton’s renowned commercial centre, North Street, is just a 10-minute walk from the train station and only five minutes away from the beach. Our Developing Professionals Group (DPG) hold regular meetings in the office, providing peer support, mentoring and guidance, and a supportive environment in which to learn, develop and grow as an engineering apprentice through knowledge exchange and mentoring.

What will you gain?

You’ll be learning whilst you earn as you study for your degree in Civil Engineering. You’ll expand your knowledge by attending university on weekly day release at the University of Brighton. We’ll support you with mentoring and opportunities to progress your Incorporated Engineer professional qualification with the Institution of Civil Engineers at the same time as you are studying.

About you:

For our apprenticeships no previous experience is required, if you are self-motivated, an excellent communicator and curious to learn more than this could be for you.

What you’ll need:

A-levels BBB-CCC, including maths -or-

BTEC Extended Diploma DDM-DMM, minimum M in Further Mathematics -or-

Pass with 60 credits overall at Access to HE Diploma. At least 45 credits at level 3, with 24 credits at merit or above. Must achieve maths level 3 units at distinction.

Applicants may be entitled to exemptions if they have completed:

an accredited Higher National Certificate (HNC) in civil engineering or equivalent with a suitable mathematics qualification

Level 3 Apprenticeship in civil engineering technician

an accredited Foundation Degree or High National Diploma (HND) in civil engineering, or equivalent with a suitable mathematics qualification.
