Director, Public Relations, Rakuten International

 

Rakuten International is looking for a creative, self-motivated and polished public relations professional to join our growing communications team. You will be part of a team that functions as an in-house agency to support Rakuten International’s portfolio of companies, with a primary mission of supporting B2C and B2B public relations for Rakuten Viber, one of the world’s leading messaging apps. You will also lend occasional support to other Rakuten businesses headquartered in North America, including our ad tech business Rakuten Advertising and our Rakuten Cash Back platform.

The Director, Public Relations has experience developing and pitching stories to media throughout EMEA in support of growing brand awareness, expanding Viber’s user base, and providing reputational air cover for our B2B teams. You’ll be a strategic advocate for one of the world’s most exciting and ambitious e-commerce brands and have support from a global team of executives, marketers and fellow communications pros.

This will be a great fit for a person who can balance independence and client advocacy with being part of a larger team; is deeply tapped into news, trends and current events; and loves synthesizing complexity into simple storytelling. You should have a talent for making your clients’ work accessible and interesting to everyone.

Key relationships: Head of Corporate Communications; Sr Director, External Communications; Rakuten Viber executive and marketing leadership; as needed, marketing leadership in other business units

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

· Collaborate with Rakuten Viber marketers and PR partners to drive media relations, including garnering coverage from publications in different verticals in multiple countries, preparing and distributing news releases, facilitating interviews with company spokespeople, and capitalizing on proactive media opportunities by continually identifying fresh ways to educate audiences about Viber’s technologies and products

· Collaborate with Viber marketers to launch consumer, fintech and ad tech products, as well as to pursue opportunities that go beyond media relations

· Give counsel and handle public relations for other Rakuten International businesses with prominent presence in EMEA, primarily its ad tech business Rakuten Advertising

· Lead media training of public-facing executives

· Build, maintain and expand relationships with a broad range of media and influencers

· Drive messaging and branding statements for businesses and ensure they are disseminated externally and across the organization and cross-functional teams

· Monitor competitor activities, current events and industry trends to ensure timely and relevant communications to our audiences

· Anticipate reputational risk issues and prepare stakeholders for escalated matters that may become public

REQUIREMENTS

· 7+ years of public relations experience, in-house and/or agency

· Direct experience and strong knowledge of trends in B2B and B2C tech, social media, fintech, e-commerce, retail and/or ad tech industries

· Experience managing multiple brands and/or products

· Comfortable working with C-level executives and cross-functional teams

· BA in Business, Marketing Fine Arts, Humanities, Communications or Journalism welcomed, though not mandatory

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

· This position may include domestic air travel and occasional international travel to meet with team members and attend industry events.
