The Hospital Division in the North London Mental Health Partnership are looking to recruit motivated and experienced matrons who are keen to make positive changes within nursing inpatient settings.

The post holders will be accountable for the allocation, deployment, prioritisation and delivery of nursing strategy and for implementing and reviewing systems, policies, standards and procedures that ensure the provision of high-quality services with frameworks agreed by the Trust. The post holder has overall responsibility for the management and development of integrated inpatient nursing services across the following wards:

1) POST 1: PICU - Ruby and Coral

The PICU's are the intensive care units for the hospital in Highgate - Ruby is an all women ward and Coral is all male. Both wards are 12-bedded.

2) POST 2: Acute - Sapphire and Diamond - Sapphire is a 16-bedded women's acute ward and Diamond is a 17-bedded male acute ward.

We have vacant Matron posts across both these areas which have arisen due to staff in post being promoted.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will have clinical leadership responsibilities and will provide frontline leadership to staff on nursing issues and patient-centred care, with quality and safety being a priority.

The post holder will develop a culture of clinical quality improvement, leading by example and empowering nurses to improve the quality of their care delivery and through this improve the well-being of service users.

To be known and visible to staff, visiting the ward at least daily as a minimum, being familiar with the service users and their needs and the challenges faced by your staff.

The post holder will have oversight and focus on each stage of the care and discharge pathway, offering expertise in the management of complex cases.

The Matron will be responsible for acting when quality standards or performance require improvement.

The Matron will be part of the Ward triumvirate (Consultant, Ward Manager and Matron) and will ensure these relationships are proactive and focus on patient flow, patient safety and staff well-being and development.

In order to meet the needs of the new Partnership services you may be required from time to time to work at different locations to your normal place of work. This may mean that you are required to work at any location that fall under Barnet, Enfield and Harringay Trust and Camden and Islington Trust. The Trust reserves the right to require staff to work at such other places or locations as it considers reasonable and necessary on a temporary or permanent basis.

Job responsibilities

The primary aim of the Modern Matron role is predominantly concerned with the delivery of high standard patient centred care and the effective management of resources. The role involves the provision of clinical expertise, professional leadership, educational/research as well as operational managerial responsibilities. The post holder will ensure that there is senior clinical presence at nights, ensure high standard of care and will provide coaching to staff around best practice.

The post holder will undertake the key functions of the matron role to ensure the attainment and monitoring of quality and clinical performance indicators and ensuring that all aspects of the Divisions service delivery is underpinned and evaluated by the patients and service users experience.

At least 40% of the post holders contractual hours will be directly linked to their clinical responsibilities.

The post holder will lead and manage inpatient services in delivering safe and effective high quality care, within the available resources.

The post holder will work in collaboration with service users and carers ensuring nursing and professional practice is guided by the principles of recovery and good clinical practice. Act as an exemplar and professional role-model in embracing core values of dignity, respect, care and compassion.

Be aware of and keep updated on wider issues effecting future professional practice in both mental health and the wider context of the NHS and ensure these are communicated to members of the team.

The Matron will provide highly visible, authoritative leadership and management to deliver services within an agreed service model.

The Matron will work to establish effective multi-disciplinary working and continued integration within and across teams .

The Matron will have responsibility for the operational management for a designated number of inpatient services.

The Matron will be expected to work flexibly and may be part of the on call and out of hours arrangements for the Trust. They may be required to work across the Trust at any time working at different sites or service areas

The Matron will ensure that the environment in which care is delivered meets the highest standards and is complaint with all inspections.

Clinical Responsibilities
  • Provide a visible presence in clinical areas and be accessible to patients, families and carers
  • Monitoring of Trust standards
  • Coaching staff in relation to Trust protocols and procedures
  • Use advanced clinical practice skills and expert knowledge in conjunction with nationally recognised assessment tools to accurately assess clinical, psychosocial or health status.
  • Participate in emergency responses (both psychiatric and medical).
  • Assimilate and review subjective and objective assessment information to inform decision-making, and negotiate and regularly review a personal care plan with the patient, carers/ relatives and the relevant members of the multi-disciplinary team
  • 40% of contractual hours to be linked to clinical responsibilities.
  • Work with managers, ward staff and clinical teams to ensure high standards of clinical care are delivered to patients at all times.
  • Promote health through empowering patients and carers and, offering appropriate health education, information and advice to enable them to make informed decisions about their
  • Ensure agreed high standards of cleanliness are met in all clinical and public areas of the Trust supporting the ward staff and clinical teams in fulfilling their infection control and prevention responsibilities and ensuring cleaning standards are
  • Support the development and implementation of Clinical Governance initiatives in conjunction with the Head of Nursing.
  • Create an environment and culture in which infection prevention and control is integral to care delivery. Set and monitor environmental standards and take responsibility ensuring compliance to cleaning audits and other inspection specifications are met.
  • Establish a communication framework in which members of the team work effectively internally and externally across clinical teams and across the Trust to optimise the patient journey and to improve patient outcomes.
  • Develop and sustain appropriate relationships, partnerships and networks to influence and improve health outcomes.

Education

Essential

  • Registered Nurse with extensive experience of Management and knowledge of Inpatient services

Education and Experience

Essential

  • Educated to Degree level or Equivalent
  • Sound practical experience of the provision of mental health services
  • Experience of managing a team and working directly with Human Recourses
  • Experience of using Quality Improvement methodology to implement positive change

Desirable

  • Experience of writing reports and undertaking investigations
  • Leadership Qualification
  • Evidence of managing change to support staff well being

Experience

Essential

  • Substantial management experience in a senior capacity managing the provision of care for people with mental health or substance misuse issues in an in-patient or community care setting.
