This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced and ambitious cancer nurse to join our cancer team in a senior leadership role to help deliver improved cancer outcomes and patient experience for our local population across Derbyshire and East Staffordshire.


The Lead Cancer Nurse will work as part of the Cancer Management Team (CMT) alongside the Cancer Lead and Head of Cancer Performance to deliver improving outcomes and experiences for people whose lives are affected by cancer, leading on Quality and Governance, CNS development, responsibility for our Familial Cancer Service, our busy MacMillan Information Centres and provide oversight of the psychology service provided to cancer patients across UHDB.


The Lead Cancer Nurse will be responsible and accountable for the delivery of high-quality patient centred cancer services, and provide strategic direction for cancer nursing and Allied Health Professional (AHP) services to ensure the national and local agenda is implemented with regard to cancer care.


The post holder will provide professional nursing advice and leadership to support the implementation and monitoring of the Cancer Strategy.
Lead in the development of the strategic direction of cancer services across the Trust in partnership with the Cancer Management Team (Lead Cancer Clinician, Head of Cancer Performance), Divisional Directors and Tumour Site Specific Leads in accordance with National and local standards and guidance.


Take a lead role in the development, implementation and evaluation of innovative models of care delivery.


Responsible for the co-ordination and delivery of the National Cancer Quality Surveillance process and lead the Trust involvement in the National Cancer Patient Experience Survey, presenting results and coordinating actions with the site-specific teams to address improvements.


Work closely with the Patient and User Involvement Team at local and network level to develop strategies that establish an integrated approach to user involvement in the planning and implementation of all aspects of cancer service development.


Ensure a quality-orientated approach to care which recognises the needs and views of patients and carers and places the patient at the centre of all activities.

We are the 4 th busiest Trauma & Orthopaedic outpatients department in England - an average of 2077 per week.
An average of 1115 patients are seen in A& Es across our network every day - 3rd largest in the country.
Last year we undertook almost 33,700 planned surgical operations in our 57 operating theatres.

The Lead Cancer Nurse has a key role in the Trust Cancer Leadership Team supporting the development and implementation of the Trust Cancer Strategy. The role will particularly focus on improving care for patients with cancer and providing strong cancer nursing leadership.


The Lead Cancer Nurse will work with business units and divisions to recruit, review and develop the cancer nursing workforce to meet the needs of cancer patients.


The post holder will have a Trust-wide focus for delivering strategically the National and Local Cancer Plan. Leading on the development of high-quality cancer patient experience across the Trust, linking with other healthcare organisations along the patient pathway, measured by the cancer patient survey and by frequent patient feedback.


The Lead Cancer Nurse will be an expert practitioner in cancer nursing providing professional leadership and strategic direction to cancer Clinical Nurse Specialists with close and effective working relationships with Matrons and Divisional Nursing Directors to advise and inform the divisional led management of cancer.


The Lead Cancer nurse will provide strategic leadership for the personalised care agenda initiatives across the trust in partnership with a range of external healthcare agencies.


The Lead Cancer Nurse will provide strategic oversight and management of Macmillan Information and Support staff to ensure the information centre offers a high-quality service for all patients and meets Macmillan Quality Standards and the needs of the local population.


To lead on ensuring divisional teams are prepared and responsive to national peer review (QSIS) and is responsible for local implementation of national cancer policy related to nursing.


Work collaboratively with the Trusts Cancer Management Team, Divisional Teams, Integrated Care System partners and all stakeholders within East Midlands Cancer Alliance (EMCA), Primary Care and the voluntary sector, ensuring the maintenance of clinical excellence in cancer care ensuring services are effectively co-ordinated, equitable, and of a high-quality standard.


Support the Divisions and tumour site Multi-Disciplinary Teams in establishing organisational priorities and objectives, and providing expert advice on the commissioning of local cancer services.


Act as a change agent to promote a culture conducive to the implementation of evidence-based practice, through the establishment of local and national protocols, guidelines and procedures within a clinical governance framework.


Ensure strategies are in place to deliver measurable and sustainableimprovements inquality and safety,in line with local and national best practice standards and overall Trust approach to service improvement and modernisation.


The Lead Cancer Nurse will lead on the development of education, training in cancer and work with the Head of Professional Development, Health Education England and Lead Cancer Nurses across EMCA to establish internal and external links with higher education institutions.


Registered nurse/ 1st degree registered with NMC.
Post-graduate study/ diploma, Master's degree or experience/knowledge
Effective networking with colleagues at all levels, experience or working across professional and organisational boundaries.
