The Discovery College is an inclusive service based on the principle that connection, community, peer support andlearning can be a transformative experience. It is moving into its second year of operation. To date the workhas been co-delivered and developed alongside those with lived experience and in collaboration with SpiritAdvocacy, Scottish Recovery Network, NHS Highland, Caithness Mental Health Group and Habitus Collective allsupporting in the planning, building, and envisioning of this new development for Highland. College courses areopen for all to enrol. Our goal is to create an environment for people to come together – be it those whoidentify as experiencing or having experienced a mental health, or substance use issue, to those who wantsupport in order to move on.

We tailor and target courses and drop-ins for men, Disabled people, LGBTQ+ folks, people who are neuro-divergent,young people and people from ethnic and cultural minorities. Currently the Discovery College operates acrossmultiple hubs in Inverness, Caithness, and Lochaber which we intend to develop further in partnership with avariety of organisations.

The Role:

In the role the post holder will be responsible for a number of key pieces of work:

  • Lead the Discovery College in offering the community a one stop shop for their recovery needs including socialactivity, courses, volunteering opportunities and access to employment.
  • Development of the strategyacross the organisation to ensures there is a clear programme of activity, training, and employmentopportunities that meets the community need.
  • Leading Discovery College Hubs across Highland. This willinvolve the maintenance and continual improvement of the model to include online learning and support as well asface to face, developing the processes and procedures that support this so that there is a coherence across allservices as well as a clear set of performance and delivery standards which ensure a positive student andvolunteer experience.
  • Developing the peer support offer and courses so that students can flourish intheir recovery journey. In doing this you will:
    • Execute the strategy for developing and growing theDiscovery College and related services including finding ways to promote and communicate about activities so ourcommunity is aware of what the offer is for them.
    • Ensure that all the Discovery College operations areeffectively managed and achieve outcomes which are in line with funder requirements and other agreed governanceand KPIs.
    • Champion co-development, lived experience, involvement and peer support, working closely withstaff, students and stakeholders.
    • Work closely with the other senior service delivery colleagues andmanagers across Centred Scotland as well as relevant external organisations to ensure that services are joinedup and readily accessible by clients. Job Purpose: To further the work of Relationships Scotland Counselling Highland in line with its charitableobjectives.

Main Tasks:

  • To lead the Board in ensuring that it fulfils its responsibilities for the governance of theorganisation.
  • To line manage and work in partnership with the Management Team to achieve the mission ofRelationships Scotland - Counselling Highland and the Relationships Scotland Network.
  • To optimise therelationship between the Board and the staff team.

Main Duties relating to:

1. Ensuring the Board fulfils its responsibilities:

  • To chair meetings of the Board and ensure that it functions effectively and carries out its duties.
  • Toensure that Board members set overall strategy and policy objectives.
  • To ensure that the Board setsoverall strategy and policy objectives
  • To ensure that the organisation’s financial dealings areprudently and systematically accounted for, audited and publicly available.
  • To monitor that decisionstaken at meetings are implemented.
  • With the Manager and Trustees, to develop appropriate and relevantagendas for meetings.
  • In close consultation with Management make recommendations on the composition ofthe Board, and future chairs of the Board (with a view to succession).
  • To work in consultation withManagement to recruit board members and co-optees with specific/relevant expertise.
  • To ensure that theBoard annually reviews its structure, role, relationship to staff and implements agreed changes asnecessary.
  • To define and keep under review selection and performance criteria for boardmembers.
  • With Management to ensure that all board members receive appropriate advice, training andinformation relating to their role.
  • To serve as an additional spokesperson for or promoter of thecharity.

2. Helping Management to achieve the organisation’s mission

  • To ensure that the board members develop a long-term strategy for the organisation together with the Management,with objectives that can be monitored.
  • To monitor progress of the Relationships Scotland -CounsellingHighland Strategic Development Plan
  • To ensure that the appropriate resources (personnel, financial,material) are secured with which to achieve the outcomes of the strategy.
  • To ensure that the ManagementTeam delivers the annual plan and budget.
  • To support, and monitor review the work of theManager
  • To lead the appraisal of all Board Members and the Manager
  • To promote the organisationto a wider audience of potential donors and benefactors.

3. Optimising the relationship between board and staff, working with the Manager

  • To ensure that the organisation has appropriate procedures
  • To comply with the current employment andequal opportunities legislation and good practice
  • To receive regular informal progress reports of theorganisation’s work through the Manager
  • To reflect to the board any concerns staff have in regard to therole of the board, it’s sub-committees or members; to relate the concerns of the board and other constituenciesto the Manager
  • In consultation with the Manager, to agree an annual calendar of meetings of the membersof the board and major events for the organisation.

If so, you can be part of a National Team of Post Diagnostic Support Link Workers (PDS Link Workers) providinghigh-quality, person-centred support to people living with dementia and their families for a minimum of a yearfollowing diagnosis in line the Scottish Government’s minimum guarantee.

The aim of the PDS National Service is to enable people to live well with dementia and is centred around AlzheimerScotland's 5 pillar model so that people move on to a period of supported self- management.

The model includes understanding the illness and coming to terms with the diagnosis, peer support, connecting andmaintaining links with their community along with planning for future care and decision making to develop anoutcome focused plan to support their future hopes, desires and aspirations.

Supporting our Perth locality, the post will be based within the North Perthshire Community Mental Health Team.Alzheimer Scotland’s PDS Link Workers are required to be effective team workers and have the skills to build andmaintain relationships with colleagues both within Alzheimer Scotland, the NHS and other stakeholders.

Skills in using digital platforms are essential as we use a blended approach to support people that involve somevirtual meetings and on-line groups.

Applicants must hold a recognised relevant professional qualification, have a good understanding of dementia and howit affects people and their families along with excellent communication skills, a warm flexible approach,combined with skills in empathy and relationship building.

In addition, you should have skills and knowledge at the Enhanced Level of the Promoting Excellence Framework or beable to evidence you are working towards its completion.

This post requires a full driving license and access to a car.

You will be sensitive and compassionate with the ability to support people in timesof difficulty or distress. You will be an excellent communicator who can work effectively both with individualsand with groups. You will have a positive approach to your own continued professional development and awillingness to participate in relevant training. A relevant qualification and previous experience of workingwith people with dementia would be an advantage.
