Job Purpose

The post holder will be an experienced, qualified audiologist and will perform work involving a significant degree of responsibility and autonomy, including activities, which are complex and non-routine. The post holder will also work within a team of audiologists and other professionals in the Nuffield Hearing & Speech Department. Supervision of other staff, including technical assistants can be expected at this level. He/she will work with the Team Leaders to ensure that clinical and professional standards are maintained at all times.

In addition to the duties listed below, the audiologist must maintain continuous professional development whilst working towards higher levels of professional competence.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities

  • Auditory assessment of children and young adults. Vestibular function tests. Electrophysiological investigations. Auditory function assessments.
  • Audiological assessment of infants, children and young adult patients, including history taking, evaluation of results and subsequent appropriate management. Contribution to team decisions regarding patient management as required.
  • Take responsibility for the safe use and maintenance of audiological equipment including ERA machines, audiometers, tympanometers, and computerized assessments. Ensure that clinical equipment is calibrated and in fit working order alongwith other team members.
  • Liaise with team members from other professional groups to assess appropriate care plans for patients
  • Taking of aural impressions, including assessing suitable ear moulds and appropriate modifications.
  • Be familiar with all current models of hearing aids in order to select the correct amplification
  • Fit hearing aids with the use of computerised probe microphone measures to verify and evaluate hearing aid performance. Additional use of sound field aided gain and speech reception tests as required.
  • Audiological rehabilitation of children and young adults, including the use of questionnaires and other outcome measures
  • Continuing evaluation of hearing aid use.
  • Provide suitable advice on environmental aids and assistive listening devices.
  • Undertake hearing aid fault-finding and provide necessary maintenance and repair.
  • Audiological assessment and rehabilitation of children and young adults with learning difficulties or special needs including: a variety of non-routine assessment methods, taking aural impressions, hearing aid selection and fitting, and follow-up
  • Aural rehabilitation of patients with additional special needs other than hearing loss.

What do we look for?

  • GCPC registration is compulsory
  • PTP or B.Sc in Audiology or equivalent.
  • At least 6 months NHS experience
  • Clinical skills and experience to appropriate standard of independent practice as supported by or working towards State Registration.
  • A candidate who is passionately driven and determined
  • Relevant practical knowledge and experience. Patient handling, counselling and all necessary skills involved in adult working
  • Experience of using all relevant diagnostic, rehabilitative and clinical instrumentation including the fitting and verification of hearing aids.
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports
  • Ability to develop and maintain record keeping systems and procedures.
