Main duties of the job

  • To act as an autonomous practitioner in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation of a diverse paediatric caseload.
  • To assist the team in the planning, development and delivery of the Paediatric Audiology Service to the paediatric population of Hounslow.
  • Provision of a range of comprehensive audiological services to a paediatric population including children with special needs.
  • Effective and supportive communication with parents and professionals.
  • Support day to day smooth running of the department.
  • To provide all aspects of tier two paediatric hearing assessment and hearing aid provision as per BSA guidance.

Job description

Job responsibilities

  • To take an active role in areas of clinical audit research and clinical governance for the audiology service, which may include designing and completing audits within own fields, participating in data collection for larger projects and contributing to the development of evidence based protocols.
  • Assist in gathering departmental performance data, developing clinical pathways and efficient working of patient management systems.
  • To be aware of the procedures and support the transition of patients from paediatric to adult services.
  • To maintain up to date theoretical knowledge and therapeutic evidence based practice regarding specialist area.
  • To provide reports, habilitation programmes (individual management plans) and other types of complex written information of an excellent standard for users, families and associated professionals and to adapt the contents to the communication styles and diversity of the recipients.
  • To overcome barriers to understanding or motivation, which may include English as a second language and/or learning or language disability or mental health difficulties in the parents/carers, for effective treatment to take place.
  • To work in partnerships with medical and education professionals and other relevant agencies in order to meet the needs of individual client and family. This could also involve Child Protection cases.

Person Specification

Qualification

Essential

  • BSc/MSc/PTP in Audiology or parts I and II of BAAT Certificate for higher training.
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Registration with the RCCP or HCPC

Desirable

  • British sign language qualification
  • Deaf awareness qualification
  • Advanced paediatric hearing aid fitting training
  • Current membership of BSA/BAA
  • Newborn Hearing Screening Programme training

Experience

Essential

  • Around 6 months working in NHS Audiology department
  • Ability to work with children and their parents with other disabilities, e.g. learning difficulties, autism.
  • Experience of behavioural, rehabilitation and electrophysiological assessment

Desirable

  • Experience of aiding children using NHSP/MCHAS protocols
  • Minimum of 1 year paediatric audiology experience
  • Experience of peer reviews
