Specialist Biomedical Scientist/Biomedical Scientist

We are seeking a qualified, well-motivated HCPC registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist, with post registration NHS experience within the Haematology/Blood Transfusion Service for this role at Cwm Taf Morgannwg University Health Board.


The Haematology service delivers a high quality pathology service to the Health Board at our Prince Charles Hospital and Royal Glamorgan Hospital sites. This post is based at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital but rotation to Prince Charles Hospital on occasions may be required, and will be supported for personal development.


This post is full time (37.5 hours per week) and once appropriately trained, participation in the 24 hour shift system will be required, for which appropriate Agenda for Change enhancements are paid.


The ability to speak Welsh is desirable for this post Welsh and/or English speakers are equally welcome to apply.
The ideal candidate will have proven post-registration experience within Haematology/Blood Transfusion, and an interest in training and staff development and meet the full criteria of the Specialist BMS Band 6 Job Description and Person Specification.


However, the service will also consider either a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist who has not yet completed the Specialist Portfolio (Band 6 Annex 21 will apply). a registered Biomedical Scientist IBMS with accredited Degree, who meets the criteria of the Band 5 Job Description and Person Specification.


A non-HCPC registered individual, with an IBMS accredited Degree seeking to become registered and will undertake further development in the role (Band 5 Annex 21 will apply).

We are an IBMS approved training laboratory, and will support completion of the IBMS portfolio to achieve Band 5, and also then support completion of the the specialist portfolio for automatic career progression from Band 5 to Band 6.

Following a period of suitable departmental training, the post holder will rotate through haematology, coagulation and blood transfusion in line with service needs.


The post holder will be responsible for maintaining and operating complex laboratory equipment, review and interpretation of patient results, and must be able to liaise effectively with clinical and administrative colleagues .


The post holder will also support the departments quality management system by performing IQC, EQA, audit and incident reposting procedures.


The ideal candidate will have a keen interest in developing newly qualified staff and will be able to deputise for the departmental training leads in their absence.
