The WBS Medical Director will be responsible for clinical leadership, building, motivating, and developing a team of clinicians and scientists, to drive forward service transformation across the Welsh Blood Service. This will cover the WBS current activity as well as emerging opportunities such as plasma for fractionation and advanced therapies.

The role will provide a clear clinical strategy and advise for Blood Collection, Processing and Distribution to hospitals in Wales, Diagnostic Laboratories, delivery of the Research and Development strategy and supporting delivery of the Blood Health Plan for Wales. In addition, ensuring clinical support to the WBS in its provision of the Bone Marrow Donor Registry.

WBS is one of the two operational divisions of Velindre University NHS Trust. The postholder will also undertake the role of Associate Medical Director (AMD) of Velindre University NHS Trust, working closely with other AMD’s, to undertake appropriate duties as specified by the Executive Medical Director.

As a member of the WBS Senior Management Team, the Medical Director will hold responsibility jointly with other SMT members, through the Trust Board, for the strategic direction of the WBS, providing Blood Service specific advice to the Board, influencing corporate policy making and development and delivery of the Trusts strategic priorities.
