We have two exciting new roles (Full time 37.5 hours per week and Part time 30 hours per week) working in our inpatient specialised rehabilitation units and Major Trauma Centre (MTC), at the Royal Stoke Hospital and the Haywood Hospital. You will be part of well-established inpatient MDTs as well as a large, supportive Neuropsychology Department.

We are looking for enthusiastic and dynamic clinical/counselling psychologists to join these services. The right person will enjoy working in a fast paced environment, and working closely with colleagues from a range of professional backgrounds.

The roles come with clinical supervision from the Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist as well as opportunities to participate in CPD, research and teaching. There is some flexibility to allow home working, depending on service need. For newly qualified candidates, preceptorship up to Band 8a will be available after 24 months in post, if all developmental requirements are met.

Main duties of the job

Core features of the roles will include:

  • Working alongside a Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist and Multi-Disciplinary Team to provide high quality psychological formulation and intervention for patients
  • Administration, scoring, interpretation, report-writing and feeding back of neuropsychological assessments, screening tools and outcome measures
  • Providing structured interventions
  • Supported by an Assistant Psychologist
  • Working with people who have complex needs which can present/lead to challenging situations or behaviours and risk.
  • Contributing to service development and evaluation projects
  • Previous experience of working with adults with physical, cognitive or mental health problems is essential.
  • Previous experience of working in a multidisciplinary team would be an advantage.
  • Working in inpatient setting, however some home working will be supported

You will be part of a large neuropsychology department, and have good links to peers across the conurbation, via Special Interest Groups and cross-Trust training events and supervision groups. Excellent CPD is available. We are happy to support applicants who aspire to complete post-doctoral neuropsychology training and will support with funding applications from various sources within and outside of the Trust.

Job Summary :

  • To deliver of neuropsychologically-informed assessment and intervention services (within the inpatient specialised rehabilitation ward).
  • The postholder will work independently, with supervision from the Consultant Clinical Neuropsychologist
  • The postholder is accountable for their own professional practice in the delivery of specialist neuropsychological care to patients with complex physical health/neurological conditions and associated psychological distress.
  • The post holder may be required to work with clients who are distressed, anxious or hostile.
  • To be compassionate in meeting the needs of patients, their carers and family members.
  • To provide clinical supervision and training to less experienced colleagues within the service and to multidisciplinary colleagues.
  • To contribute to formal and informal research as an integral part of the post.
  • To be proactive in continual service improvement within own service area.
  • To promote at all times a positive image of the service and the wider Trust.

Key Duties/Responsibilities

  • Provides specialist psychological and neuropsychological assessment of patients with complex medical and neurological conditions based on the appropriate use, interpretation and integration of data from a variety of sources/tools.
  • Skilfully selects, administers, scores up, analyses, interprets, and feeds back (both in person with patients and via report-writing) complex neuropsychological tests and wider assessment data derived from a variety of sources including psychological and neuropsychological tests, self-report measures, informal and structured observations and medical information from notes and liaison with appropriate colleagues.
  • Responsible for recognising the potential for or signs of client harm, abuse or neglect, including poor clinical practice, effective and timely risk assessment and management, and reporting all such concerns and taking all reasonable steps to protect the client. Responsible for prioritising, identifying and reporting concerns regarding the safeguarding of children who may be at risk.
  • Formulates plans for, and delivers, specialist psychological therapy and/or management of clients presenting emotional/cognitive/behavioural/physical difficulties based upon an appropriate conceptual framework and evidence-based practice. Negotiates the implementation of such plans with clients and/or their carers and members of the MDT.
  • Adjusts and refines psychological formulations drawing upon different explanatory models and maintaining a number of provisional hypotheses, and makes clearly communicated decisions about treatment options.
  • Delivers group interventions to patients and evaluates/refines same in response to patient feedback.
  • Provides specialist psychological advice, guidance and consultation to other staff contributing directly to clients formulation and intervention plan.
  • Communicates in a way which recognises difference and ensures that people feel included and their individual communication needs are met.
  • Communicates complex and sensitive information to clients during the course of any contacts where the atmosphere may be emotive where there may be barriers to understanding or where the client may react in and challenging manner.
  • Shares information relating to psychological assessment and formulation with clients, carers and families in a responsive, empathic manner, taking into consideration the possible complexities of the circumstances and the sensitive nature of the information.
  • Communicates effectively with all professionals involved in the clients care including all members of the multidisciplinary team, to maximise the quality of service delivered to patients.

Post-graduate doctoral level training in clinical / counselling psychology (or its equivalent prior to 1996) as accredited by the BPS, including models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology.
