Patient counselling and tailoring treatments is pivotal in this patient group. This is a unique joint specialist role involving working as a specialist educator in a fantastic friendly E& T team to deliver excellent training to our 10 foundation trainee pharmacistsThis rewarding role is varied and dynamic with a considerable opportunity for direct patient contact. It provides abundant opportunity for being resourceful in applying all your knowledge, problem solving, team working and communication skills with ample opportunity to develop and hone your leadership skills. The ideal candidate should have excellent organisational, people skills and be non-judgemental.Therefore, no two days are the same - in the education role this could include developing the reformed curriculum, being a designated supervisor to your own trainee, overseeing the training experience or delivering small group teaching.The candidates should have a diploma in pharmacy practice or equivalent alongside a range of clinical pharmacy experience. Experience in HIV/ID and a prescribing qualification are desirable qualities. Candidates willing to gain the IP qualification will be considered.

Main duties of the job

  • Be a Pharmacy specialist in this area and participate in, develop and provide excellent clinical pharmacy services to the Infectious Diseases inpatient ward, HIV/ID and Oxford Sexual Health Service clinics and allied services.
  • To be proactive in supporting the MDT including teaching and training activities.
  • Support and deputise for the Directorate Lead Pharmacist in the provision of a safe, effective and efficient clinical pharmacy service to Specialist Medicine Directorate, in accordance with local and national standards and strategy.
  • Have delegated responsibility for specific aspects of the pharmacy service in Oxford Sexual Health Services or infectious diseases e.g. Medicines Management, as agreed with the Directorate or Divisional Lead Pharmacists
  • To ensure the provision of an effective learning environment within the pharmacy department of OUH NHS Foundation Trust, which will strengthen foundation trainee pharmacist training.
  • To act as a Local Learning Set Facilitator to support the development and delivery of a training programme as required
  • To oversee the quality assurance of Foundation Trainee Pharmacist Training at OUH.
  • To liaise and network with other Education Programme Directors within NHS England South East.
  • To input into the strategic planning of the implementation of the GPhC initial education and training for pharmacists, especially supporting reforms with independent prescribing and Designated Prescribing Practitioners.

Job description

Job responsibilities


  • Be or become a knowledge expert in clinical pharmacy relating to infectious diseases/HIV including prescribing, screening, advising, and optimising medicines use in the area
  • Provide a holistic, specialist pharmaceutical care service to patients attending HIV/ID and Sexual Health Outpatient Clinics
    • Provide advice and counselling on antiretroviral therapy
    • Adherence support
    • Lifestyle support
    • Referral to HIV specialist nurse/ HIV psychologist / external agencies as needed
  • To support the Lead Pharmacist Education and Training to develop a local training programme that meets the requirements of the NHSE WT& E quality standards.
  • To work with the Lead Pharmacist Education and Training to develop a strategic plan for implementation of the GPhC initial education and training of foundation trainee pharmacists to be implemented in 2025-26.
  • To oversee the quality assurance of Foundation Trainee Pharmacist Training at OUH.
  • To liaise and network with other Education Programme Directors within NHSE to input into the regional programme and promote good practice.

  • GPhC registered pharmacist
  • Post-Graduate Clinical Pharmacy Diploma or equivalent experience
  • Leadership qualification or training
