The Role

in 2012, Start Up Loans (SUL) provides support to individuals across the UK who are looking to start up or with an early stage business and can benefit from ≤GBP 25,000 in finance. SUL support is available through a range of Partners (Business Support and Post Loan Support), with funding through its Finance Partner. The scheme forms the 'start up' aspect of the British Business Banks Start Up, Scale Up and Stay ahead strategy.

Launched in May 2020, the Bounce Back Loan Scheme (BBLS) provided loans of ≤GBP 50,000 to businesses across the UK that were seeing their cashflow disrupted as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak. BBLS was available through a range of BBB accredited lenders and the scheme was part of a wider package of government support for UK businesses and employees, including the Coronavirus Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CBILS), the Coronavirus Large Business Interruption Loan Scheme (CLBILS), Recovery Loan Scheme (RLS) and the Future Fund. The BBLS closed to new applications on 31/3/21 having provided support to 1.5m businesses totalling GBP 47bn in loans advanced.

The Small Business Lending team encompasses Start Up Loans, the Bounce Back Loan Scheme Relationship Management, Audit & Insight and Recoveries & Operations teams.

The Commercial Strategy Director is a senior leadership role in Small Business Lending (SBL) reporting directly to the Commercial MD of Small Business Lending. They have overall responsibility for SBL strategy, product, SBL change portfolio and SUL's platform (Atlas CRM).

Strategy and Change The role holder is accountable for the development of the SUL product and the strategic vision for Small Business Lending, working across BBB, SUL and with the SBL Senior Management Team to identify activities required to achieve the longer-term vision. The role holder will identify gaps in delivery, engage with external organisations to identify best practice and develop pilots to inform future delivery and funding. They will lead development of short term plans and inform longer term strategy for the Scheme, collaborating with internal and external stakeholders, including DBT and HMT.

The Commercial Strategy Director oversees the delivery of major business projects. They are accountable for promoting best practices for change across SBL, actively embedding a collaborative and pragmatic approach to continuous improvement. The role holder takes the lead in enabling and empowering all SBL colleagues to identify and drive continuous improvement across the business aligning these to wider BBB strategies. They are accountable for ensuring the success of continuous improvement and change activities across SBL, aligning to strategies and ensuring the customer is at the heart of decision making around change, strategy and delivery.

The Commercial Strategy Director delivers the Scheme plans to support new bids for funding that align with the strategic vision for the business. They are accountable for producing new bids for funding that align with the strategic vision for the business. They will also lead on proposals for growth, ensuring all relevant colleagues have the opportunity to input and are engaged at the right time.

To be considered for this role you must have a track record of delivering success in similar roles within financial services with prior experience managing operational budgets; identifying and delivering on efficiency savings.

You will have also operated at senior management/executive level and have experience of working with stakeholders at all levels

Experience of defining, driving and delivering change activities is also essential.
