Note: this is an unpaid volunteering position (however reasonable expenses are covered). This role requires a commitment of approximately 6 hours per week, for a minimum term of 2 years.

Open Palm exists to create an equal start line for young people from underrepresented ethnic and social backgrounds. Our programmes support young people’s education, help to close the opportunity gap and provide important access to the workplace. 

We are currently seeking two new Trustees to join our dynamic Board and help us to develop and deliver on our ambitious plans. We want to attract people who have a strong connection to our cause, seeking to change outcomes for the next generation. This is a strategic management role, which sits on the Board but also oversees and leads work streams, with accountability for delivery.

Our Trustees play an active role in the day-to-day running of the charity. As a small charity making a big impact, we are looking for committed individuals who are willing to lead from the front and help to drive programmes forward.

Who we are looking for:

· Someone willing to bring energy, enthusiasm and most importantly, commitment to the role.

· A can-do attitude with a proven ability to lead and get things done. 

· An effective communicator willing to participate actively in discussions and make recommendations. 

· A willingness to oversee other volunteers, including leading team meetings, assigning tasks and managing work where required.

· A strong personal commitment to equality, diversity, and inclusion. 

· Someone who is willing to take a task from the ‘idea’ stage to reality, coordinating with other volunteers and external partners as required.

Great also if (but  not essential):

· Someone who has either: 

(i) a Governance, Risk or Safeguarding background; or

(ii) a willingness to leverage their network to drive partnerships

Term in office: 

· An initial period of two years with the possibility of extension (if agreed by the individual and the remaining Board Trustees).

Time commitment: 

· Approximately 6 hours per week (split flexibly) to oversee and contribute to charity management.

· Attending Board meetings every 2 months (more frequently as required). All meetings are held remotely by video call.

· Attending approximately 6 Advisory Group meetings per year. All meetings are held remotely by video call.

· Where required, leading specific volunteer teams (including hosting / managing virtual meetings).

· Able to attend at least 3 in-person events per year (usually in central London). This is essential to develop an understanding of what we do. Reasonable travel expenses can be reclaimed and a meal is provided for half / full day events.

Trustee responsibilities:

· Being efficient and effective - Making the best use of our resources and creating an environment for volunteers to deliver impact.

· Being accountable - Taking ownership of tasks and issues that may arise, speaking up and seeking help where required.

· Being open and transparent - Always working in a clear and honest way, escalating to other Trustees and Independent Advisors where necessary. 

· Being aware of safeguarding and risk - We primarily work with young people and need to remain conscious of potential risks.

· Following the law - Ensuring that we comply with our governing document, charity law and any other relevant legislation or regulations.

· Being our best - Aligning with best practice in our operations and conduct so that we are delivering the best for young people.
