As the Communications Officer for the BSPP you will be communicating and promoting the work of the society through our social media platforms and website. This is an exciting opportunity for a student to gain experience within a learned society as well as gain skills in website management, content creation and science communications.
Location: Remote with travel to Oxford for a conference
Dr Carrie Brady, senior lecturer at the University of the West of England and Promotions and Social Media manager for BSPP.
Manage the social media accounts for the BSPP
Update the BSPP website with relevant events and job opportunities.
The student will also have the opportunity to attend a BSPP Board meeting. Ticket costs, travel and accommodation will all be provided.
Personal Project:
As well as completing the daily tasks of a communications office at the BSPP you will also be given personal projects that you can use to develop skills and make your own.
As the communications officer, you could write one or two blog articles based on your current research.
Undergraduate and Masters Bursary Vlogs: developing new ways to encourage students in Plant Pathology is important to grow our discipline. We ask all bursary recipients to submit a video of their experience. If Science Media is something you are interested in, you will get the opportunity to edit and create content using these videos to help promote our bursary scheme to future students.
Development of a new outreach activity: Biology week will take place from Monday 7th to Friday 11th October this year and the BSPP would like to encourage/support our members to deliver outreach activities in Biology week.The student is welcome to create their initiatives as well as use the RSB events programme.
At the start of your placement, you will receive a two-week handover with the publicity and Communications officer where you will learn the day-to-day tasks and be introduced to the team that can help you through your time. After this, a supervisor meeting will be held once a fortnight with the promotions and social media manager. All supervision will be conducted remotely [CB1]with one in-person meeting midway through the placement.
A 100 to 300 word sample of writing for a general audience (which should not have been generated or edited using ChatGPT or similar software), This can be a 100 – 300 word summary of your PhD or Science subject of choice targeted at a general audience.
