About the Role:

Barclay Simpson is partnering with a prominent global insurance firm in their search for a Head of Market Risk Management . This senior role, reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO), presents an exceptional opportunity to lead and shape the firm's market risk strategy, managing a portfolio with over $130 billion in assets under management. The role offers high-level visibility within the firm and significant influence on the executive committee and the broader management team.

While there is no direct management responsibility, the Head of Market Risk Management will be tasked with overseeing the development and implementation of the firm’s market risk appetite. This individual will serve as a trusted advisor to senior management, responsible for providing critical insights on key investment risks, conducting stress testing scenarios, and presenting strategic risk insights to the group executive committee and board.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Market Risk Strategy: Own and lead the firm’s market risk appetite , ensuring alignment with broader organizational goals and risk tolerance.
  • Stress Testing & Scenario Analysis: Conduct in-depth stress testing and scenario analysis to assess the potential impact of market events on the portfolio, helping to guide risk mitigation strategies.
  • Risk Insights & Reporting: Provide high-level insights on market risk exposures, including emerging risks, and offer recommendations to senior management for risk management and mitigation.
  • Management Information & Reporting: Own the creation and presentation of all management information related to market risk. Deliver regular updates and risk assessments to the group executive committee and board.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Act as a key advisor to the CFO, senior leadership team, and the executive committee on market risk issues, shaping strategic decisions with your insights and analysis.
  • Governance & Compliance: Ensure market risk management processes and frameworks adhere to internal policies and regulatory requirements, maintaining strong governance around risk oversight.
  • Portfolio Oversight: Provide continuous monitoring of the $130bn portfolio, evaluating risks across asset classes and ensuring compliance with the firm’s risk appetite.
  • Leadership & Influence: While not managing a team directly, this role will influence market risk practices across the organization and build strong relationships with senior stakeholders, enhancing the firm’s risk culture.

Key Requirements:

  • Significant experience in Market Risk Management , preferably within the insurance, financial services, or asset management sectors.
  • Deep understanding of investment risk management, market dynamics, and stress testing methodologies.
  • Experience with portfolio risk management and a solid understanding of how macroeconomic factors and market events impact large investment portfolios.
  • Ability to engage and influence senior leadership, presenting complex risk concepts in a clear and actionable manner.
  • Experience in management information and reporting to senior executives and boards.
  • Strong quantitative skills, including proficiency in risk analytics tools and data-driven decision-making.
  • Proven track record of ownership and leadership in shaping risk appetite and governance frameworks.
  • A background in finance, economics, actuarial science , or a related field is highly preferred.
