An exciting secondment opportunity has arisen for an experienced Health Visitor to join BFS Health Visiting Service as a Parental and Infant Mental Health and Wellbeing (PIMHW) Health Visitor. We are seeking a compassionate, person centred individual, with a genuine interest in working with women and their families in the perinatal period, who has excellent communication and multi-agency liaison skills. The successful candidate will act as a resource for the service providing expert advice and guidance and act as an advocate for families with perinatal/infant mental health concerns with relevant HCPs (health care professionals), agencies and stakeholders.


The successful candidate will be responsible for providing relevant consultation, training and support to the universal children's services. The emphasis will be on early intervention, prevention of mental health difficulties, and the promotion of positive relationships between parents and their infants.
The Specialist Health Visitor will be responsible for leading and developing Parental and Infant Mental Health and Wellbeing (PIMHW) services across Birmingham Community Healthcare NHS trust .


The Specialist Health Visitor will have a high level of relevant expert knowledge and skill, including training in Video Interactive Guidance (VIG) and will work in collaboration with other services.


The Specialist Health Visitor will Lead on the implementation of multi-disciplinary pathways, policies and procedures to address the mental health needs of families within the Health Visiting Service.


The Specialist Health Visitor will provide relevant consultation and training and development to the universal children's services in relation to Parental and Infant Mental Health and wellbeing. The emphasis will be on early intervention, prevention of mental health difficulties, and the promotion of positive relationships between parents and their infants.


The Specialist Health Visitor will contribute to the Public Health Agenda including the achievement of Public Health targets and reduce health inequalities. They will provide professional leadership on PIMHW, They are expected to take an asset-based approach to build PIMHW knowledge and skills of key partner agencies and priority communities to contribute to strengthen tier 0-2 of the PIMHW pathways.

~ Provide highly skilled specialist consultation, support and training to colleagues to develop their skills in critical thinking, reflective practice and knowledge about Perinatal and Infant Mental Health, the dyadic relationship and the importance of whole family engagement.


~ This includes values and beliefs around respect and empowerment, guiding analysis of behaviour, exploration of feelings and thoughts, and movement to wishes and intentions.


~ Undertake VIG interventions to increase the dyadic relationship between infant and carer, improving the life chances for the child.


~ Ability to effectively deliver training to the HV team and other disciplines as required. To lead in the training analysis and gap identification of the HV team in relation to PIMHW.


~ Ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders, representing BCHC NHS Foundation Trust HV service (and other clinical staff as required), in both the short term and long term strategic planning for PIMHW services for Birmingham .


~ As the specialist, Lead on PIMHW and well being projects as required.


~ Understand the impact of poor parental mental health on infants and other family members, and the role that the health visiting services can play in mitigating this.


~ Demonstrate a good knowledge and understanding of relevant legislation, policies and procedures relating to child protection. Participate in risk assessment & decision-making process at child protection meetings, providing written reports, and health advice when required.


~ To actively participate in Child Protection supervision.


~ Be flexible to the needs of the service.


~ Develop and maintain effective communication with Health Visiting teams and to maintain productive working relationships. Ensure that all clients and colleagues are treated at all times in an equitable manner, respecting and showing an understanding of diversity in the workplace


~ Attend the Trust mandatory and statutory training programme required for your role ensuring that your training is completed and follows the essential skills policy including regular appraisals.
To be competent using Microsoft applications, including word, excel and powerpoint.


~ To be competent in videoing and editing film.

Evidence of training after qualifying as a Health Visitor(Learning Beyond Registration)

Registered Nurse Mental Health qualification

Personal Qualities
Ability to identify and sustain appropriate relationships, partnerships and networks to influence and improve PIMH health outcomes
Advanced knowledge of Parent and Infant mental health.
Ability to identify, assess and interpret the needs of families with mental health issues. To offer and develop programmes of care where needed and escalate where appropriate
Ability to develop, co-ordinate and facilitate groups to deliver specialist programmes of care and education
Ability to assess, analyse and communicate to a wide range of professional and non-professional groups at individual or group level on a wide range of often complex health and professional related issues

Demonstration of a champion role in PIMH, promoting the importance of positive Parental and child mental health in future life chances and achievements
Experience of VIG, showing highly developed skills in the engagement of clients to work towards realizing a better future in their relationships with their child.
Experience of supporting and leading health professionals (such as health visitors, midwives etc.) Experience of advising/training other professionals in PIMH
Development and leadership in delivering of specialist health programmes of care.
