This Band 5 Occupational Therapy post is an exciting opportunity to gain skills in the specialist setting of a Psychiatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), whilst being supported by a skilled Occupational Therapy team.


The post holder will be based with the broader hospital OT Team, in the Larch Therapy Department, but they will work as a PICU team with a Band 6 OT, Band 5 OT and two Band 3 OT Technicians, to provide an OT service to the 2 PICU wards. Both wards have an activity room for OT sessions, as well as therapy gardens.


A knowledge of the VdT Model of Creative Ability and the Allen Cognitive Disability Model will therefore benefit any candidates applying for this post.


The hospital has 7 mental health inpatient wards across the site. The OT team are based in the Therapy Department, which also provides the post holder with the opportunity to liaise and work with experienced and skilled OTs, Exercise Specialists, Physiotherapists, Psychologists, Dietetics Team, and the Art Psychotherapy Team. The post holder will have the opportunity to facilitate groups in the OT Department for service users across the hospital site.


Professionally accountable for own caseload, working autonomously to deliver occupational therapy in a variety of inpatient and/or community settings including the service user's own home.
To develop and implement occupational therapy treatment plans and provide advice to service users to enable them to maintain, restore or create a balance between their abilities and the demands of their occupation and environment in the areas of self-care, productivity and leisure. Service users have a range of mental health conditions or learning disabilities.
To work compassionately with service users and carers to achieve identified occupational therapy goals and to promote social inclusion, independence and well-being through a client-centred approach.
To facilitate others in the team to develop competence by providing clinical advice and training to occupational therapy associate practitioners, assistants and students as appropriate.
To promote at all times a positive image of people with mental health conditions and learning disabilities
To promote at all times a positive image of the Occupational Therapy Service and the wider Trust.

Accountable for designated caseload, working within an evidenced based occupational therapy treatment plan and care programme approach under the guidance of the supervising occupational therapist. Undertakes occupational therapy assessments, addressing occupational performance and skill deficits.
Assesses and manages risk effectively in clinical and community settings including the service users own home
Works with service users and carers to identify Occupational Therapy goals as part of the overall Multidisciplinary Team plan.
Uses technical and creative skills to engage service users in therapeutic activities and encourages them in a compassionate manner, to support them in achieving their identified goals.
Monitors and evaluates occupational therapy treatment in order to measure progress and modifies treatment plans to ensure effectiveness of clinical interventions.
Provides advice, education and training to service users, carers and other healthcare staff involved in service users care.
Undertakes health promotion activities.
Acts as lead professional for service users if no other professional is involved in the service users care and may undertake care co-ordination for service users on Care Programme Approach where there is an occupational therapy component identified.
Responsible for identifying and reporting concerns regarding the safeguarding of children who may be at risk.
BSC in Occupational Therapy
Knowledge of Mental Health issues
Previous experience of working in mental health setting
