Divisional Director of Nursing for Cancer

Location: Brighton and surrounding areas

Pay Rates:

£46.50 to £53.50 paye per hour

£52.00 to £60.00 paye inclusive of holiday pay per hour

£59.00 to £70.00 umbrella per hour

Depending on skill and experience.

Days and Hours: Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm – 37.5 hours per week

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Be a visible and credible leader, modelling and reinforcing the Trust values and behaviours at all times, celebrating success and acting as a proud ambassador for Nursing, Midwifery and AHPs.
  • Provide professional and strategic leadership to the nurses, midwives and AHPs within their division to ensure they are appropriately supervised and managed and are delivering high quality care in efficient and effective ways and in line with NMC and HCPC codes of practise and competencies.
  • Working closely with key members of the divisional team as well as the corporate executive and nursing teams, the Divisional Director of Nursing / AHPs will take a lead role in providing senior clinical leadership for the division’s Patient First Programme activities, ensuring the delivery of True North objectives at divisional and Trust level.
  • Work collaboratively with the Chief Nurse and other Directors of Nursing to support all Nurses / Midwives / Allied Health Professionals with their continual personal and professional development and actively contribute to the design and delivery of the Nursing, midwifery and AHP strategy for the Trust.
  • Take a lead role in specific nursing corporate projects and the management of specific nursing functions across the Trust’s divisional structure, as agreed by the Chief Nurse.
  • Lead on developing the division’s objectives in relation to patient outcomes, including the development and maintenance of care standards for all patients.
  • Lead on the divisional implementation of national and local quality drivers arising from national enquiries (eg. Frances, Keogh, and Berwick).
  • Provide management responsibility, leadership and expert advice to divisional Heads of Nursing, Matrons / Clinical Heads of Service on a variety of clinical issues to ensure clinical, safeguarding and educational standards set by the Trust are implemented and monitored within the division.
  • Be able to represent the Trust on professional Nursing, Midwifery and AHP issues at a regional and national level.
  • With the Chief of Service and Divisional Director of Operations, promote a culture that nurtures and promotes effective multi-professional working to deliver quality outcomes and meet agreed performance KPIs.
  • Create a culture of openness and transparency where staff are able to raise their concerns and know they will be listened to and where they will be able to get appropriate feedback in a timely manner.
  • Lead on quality and safety work programmes whilst ensuring that the fundamentals of safe care are delivered within the division
  • In the absence of the DDO or Chief of Service, provide leadership and support to the operational management and medical clinical teams.
  • With the Chief of Service and Divisional Director of Operations support the implementation and ongoing development of PFIS within the Division
  • Present as part of the divisional triumvirate at divisional SDR
  • Present information to a wide range of stakeholders in both formal and informal settings, interpreting infromation and adapting their delivery style to suit the audience.
  • Establish and maintain strategic links with a range of external partners/stakeholders or manage the links made through the divisional team.
  • Engage with external partners/ stakeholders, particularly those representingf patients, to gain their contribution and commitment to ensure the successful delivery of the service.

Essential Skills

  • Considerable experience at senior nurse level (e.g. Matron) in an acute Health Care setting
  • Extensive knowledge of complex and acute (staff management/financial management and change management) including sound knowledge of public involvement.
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience in the operational management of hospital services.
  • Sound understanding of Health Service policy.
  • Sound understanding of the National nursing and patient agendas.
  • Advanced management / leadership experience of clinical teams
  • Sound understanding of Clinical Governance and Risk Management processes.
  • Clinically credible
  • Sound medical or clinical judgement.
  • Ability to convey highly complex and contentious messages.
  • Able to lead, motivate and influence individuals both within and external to the organisation.
  • To facilitate good working relationships with other colleagues across Trust and Health Economy
  • Able to interpret complex information and take appropriate action and to provide expert advice as a result.
  • Demonstrate political judgement and intellectual flexibility.
  • Identify and interpret trends taking appropriate action as required.
  • Evidence of having undertaken own development to improve understanding of equalities issues

Essential Experience and Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse/Midwife, 1st Level /1st Level Degree
  • Current NMC registration, UK
  • Master’s level qualification or evidence of post graduate study
  • A comprehensive / specialist understanding of the safeguarding children and adults’ processes

  • Proven ability to develop & implement highly specialised programmes of care and care packages.
  • Sound understanding of health service policy.
