Ocean Career: NOC Coastal Ocean Modeling Research Scientist

ECO Posted On August 1, 2023

We are the National Oceanography Centre (NOC)—the UK's center of excellence for oceanographic sciences. We are a national research organization, delivering integrated marine science and technology from the coast to the deep ocean.

We are made up of a dynamic and vibrant community whose focus is on improving the world in which we live. Our work is balanced by our strong sense of purpose, values and behaviors and an unwavering commitment to a ‘one NOC’ approach.

We have a rich history dating back to 1949, and our future has never looked more exciting as we aim to be the world’s most innovative oceanographic institution.

About the role

We seek a talented and enthusiastic coastal ocean modeler to the join the marine systems modelling group at NOC in Liverpool. They will work on developing, applying, and analyzing coastal ocean models to explore the impacts of climate change and direct anthropogenic drivers on coastal ocean physics and the implications for biogeochemistry and ecosystems. This would use a range of modelling tools, particularly at high resolution (kilometric and sub-kilometric scales), including the NEMO ocean model, the ERSEM and/or MEDUSA ecosystem models, and also Lagrangian approaches. The work is across a range of projects, particularly in the international context (such as Future states Of the global Coastal ocean: Understanding for Solution; ), linking to our UN Ocean Science decade projects, and exploring these issues in, for example SE Asia and the Caribbean, as well as in the Northwest European shelf seas. This is expected to lead to publication in high impact journal papers both as lead and co-author, with extensive national and international collaboration.

They will be expected to develop their own scientific research directions in this context and, in time, develop new projects and seek funding.

About you

The successful candidate will have deep and wide experience in numerical coastal ocean modelling, including with 3d hydrodynamic models and with ecosystem, biogeochemical and/or lagrangian approaches. They will be skilled at using model analysis software (e.g., python or matlab). They will have strong journal publication track record appropriate to career stage and knowledge of coastal ocean physics, biogeochemical and/or ecosystem process. Excellent communication skills are essential.

They will have completed a PhD in a relevant numerate environmental science discipline, or hold equivalent research track record and a strong 1st degree in numerate science, engineering, or mathematics

At a band 5 level a proven track record of significant grant capture and a wide range of collaborations is expected.

Why the NOC?

We offer a generous set of benefits including 28 days annual leave, plus 3.5 local closure days and 8 public bank holidays, and a contributory Group Personal Pension Plan.
