Job Purpose: As a vital member of the laboratory team under the guidance of the Senior Specialist Biomedical Scientist, the Biomedical Scientist role demands flexibility, including weekend and bank holiday availability, encompassing a minimum of 37.5 hours per week in adherence to Agenda for Change (AfC) Terms and Conditions. This HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist will deliver a patient-centric, cost-effective, and efficient service. The role entails rotational assignments across various laboratory sections and collaboration with different laboratories within the ESEL Pathology Partnership, involving participation in either the AfC hybrid (day & night) or permanent night shift patterns.

Main Duties, Responsibilities, and Result Areas:

Technical and Scientific:

  • Execute routine examination procedures within the scope and in accordance with standard operating procedures and policies.
  • Conduct routine preventative maintenance on analytical instrumentation, addressing any unplanned maintenance to rectify instrument or assay non-conformity.
  • Perform acceptance testing of analytical instrumentation and examination procedures before analyzing patient samples, implementing corrective actions for any deviations from acceptance criteria.
  • Conduct first-line reviews of internal quality checks and external quality assessments (EQA) as per standard operating procedures.
  • Verify works undertaken by manufacturer engineers.
  • Evaluate the technical authenticity of patient results and implement countermeasures following standard operating procedures.
  • Communicate validated critical patient results to relevant clinical teams in a timely manner as per departmental standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure accuracy of patient results through vigilant monitoring and maintenance of laboratory apparatus.
  • Monitor the outstanding test list to prevent analyte stability, clinical need, or service level agreement breaches.
  • Record information on the pathology computer system, ensuring compliance with national and local data standards.
  • Liaise with clinical staff to ensure optimal service delivery.
  • Maintain the integrity of reagents and consumables by monitoring cold and ambient storage areas, taking immediate remedial action for temperature deviations.

Laboratory Informatics:

  • Demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office, instrument-specific software, specialized data management software, and the laboratory information system.
  • Adhere to local and national policies for the safe, secure, and confidential processing and storage of patient and laboratory information.
  • Accurately record relevant information on the laboratory information system and intermediary systems.
  • Ensure records are up-to-date and securely stored to comply with ISO15189 standards.

Qualifications and Experience:
