London, United Kingdom NIHR (National Institute for Health and Care Research) Full time

The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is a large, multi-faceted and nationally distributed organisation which seeks to improve the health and wealth of the nation through research and is funded by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC). On behalf of DHSC, the LGC Grant Management Group manages numerous research funding programmes and initiatives. Its funding programmes support high quality research in a broad range of topic areas that benefits the NHS, public health and social care.
The role will support the Senior Research Manager in the NIHR Collaborations team to cover a range of activities, with a primary focus on the full end-to-end process of research management, from supporting the set-up of new calls for applications through to the active monitoring of funded projects.
The successful candidate for this role will be a proactive and organised individual, who is capable of rising to the challenge to support an array of activities across the NIHR, and building and maintaining strong working relationships across multiple teams. Initially, the role will support strategic initiatives focused on mental health research and capacity development, under the Mental Health Research Initiative (MHRI). The MHRI was launched in July 2021 as a cross-NIHR initiative spanning several NIHR-funded research programmes and infrastructure, tied together by overarching ambitions to: improve the capacity of mental health research and implementation across the UK; address populations with a high MH burden or historically underserved by research activity; and address the priorities set out in the cross funder Mental Health Research Goals 2020-2030.
We are looking for a Research Manager to work in a unique capacity across multiple funding programmes to manage and support projects in the NIHR Collaborations team, with a primary focus on the MHRI.
The following are general responsibilities for a Research Manager within the NIHR. Supporting all aspects of research funding, including researching and articulating potential investment opportunities, advising potential applicants, revising application forms and guidance documents, reviewing applications for funding, coordinating and managing the peer review process, overseeing the funding committees, coordinating and attending funding committee meetings, providing feedback to successful and unsuccessful applicants.
Undertaking due diligence of proposals based on critical assessment of healthcare-related projects, including:
reviewing the scientific, technical and clinical rationale
analysis of value for money
Negotiating funding agreements for projects recommended for funding, including the negotiation of milestones and deliverables, financial arrangements and reporting requirements to enable successful project progression.
Managing a portfolio of funded projects, including monitoring of scientific, clinical and financial performance, reviewing IP and dissemination plans and managing contractual changes to ensure appropriate strategies are in place leading to patient benefit and/or commercial realisation.
Liaising regularly with internal and external stakeholders, including attending, organising and leading meetings, representing the funder’s perspective at project meetings to facilitate successful project development, and promoting and representing funding programmes at external meetings.
Supporting strategic development activities, such as those related to mental health.
Assisting in the preparation of regular and ad hoc reports, papers and minutes related to the MHRI portfolio and across a broader range of projects as required.
Assisting with the organisation and running of ad-hoc meetings, webinars and workshop activities for various projects, including the annual MHRI Symposium.
Assisting with the quality control of minutes, outcome letters and other external documentation.
Ad hoc “special project” work and support for other projects across the Collaborations team, including reviews of reports and strategic proposals.
Act as a role model to represent the NIHR through external interfaces to UK Government, academic, industry, and the clinical community.
A degree in biomedical, health or social sciences.
Experience of working in a healthcare research management environment, with a track record in successful management of projects and programmes.
Strong planning and organisational skills; able to prioritise and balance tasks to successfully manage multiple ongoing projects and programmes across the NIHR.
Excellent writing skills and meticulous attention to detail
Join our team and you’ll be working with an exceptional organisation that manages high quality health and care research for the benefit of patients and the public. NIHR is the UK’s largest funder of health and care research.
Bonus - subject to company performance
25 days annual leave, plus public holidays (UK)
Enhanced contributory pension scheme
Life Insurance
Season Ticket Loan
This is a hybrid role with an expectation for all employees to attend our offices a minimum of 4 days a month, usually worked as 1 day per week, and may increase, subject to team requirements.
