The current vacancy is based at our Sunderland Royal hospital site in Outpatients Department. The post offers a stimulating and challenging opportunity to gain knowledge, skills and experience in Rheumatology medicine, working closely with the specialist medical team
We are looking to recruit an individual who is passionate about providing high quality and compassionate care to our patients. We are looking for a clinical leader who will demonstrate role modelling, empowerment, and support to our clinical team and provide leadership, team development and high quality nursing care.
You will need to demonstrate continuing professional development and a strong commitment to develop others and work closely within a multi-disciplinary team. The Lead Specialist Nurse will be expected to support the Matron and the Rheumatology Team to maintain a patient focused positive experience and environment.

The Trust employs around 8,300 people and provides a range of hospital services to a local community of around 430,000 residents. To lead and coordinate the delivery and development of the specialist service through the use of effective evidence based practice in line with agreed national standards for patient safety and monitoring.
To contribute to the organisation of multidisciplinary, patient centred care.
To be accountable for the planning and delivery of safe, effective and compassionate patient care in relation to dedicated pathways of care, working as an autonomous practitioner within the specialism.
To provide specialist clinical advice and support to patients and clinical staff within the Trust on the assessment, management and care of patients within the specialist area.
To continuously improve clinical care standards in line with the clinical governance framework.
To exercise accountability as set out in the NMC/HCPC Code.
To ensure effective communication internally and externally regarding patient care and resources.
Provide education and training to clinical staff across the Trust.
Provide expert specialist clinical advice and support to patients and clinical staff within the Trust on the management and care of patients within the specialist area.
To provide direct access for patients, either face to face or telephone consultation
To play a key role in ensuring that national and local standards/targets for specialist area are met.
To manage/lead nurse led clinics in relation to reviewing patients and play a key role in optimising complex treatment regimes, facilitating hospital discharge and preventing avoidable hospital admissions.
Ability to assist patients to move as per Trust Moving and Handling Policy.


Current NMC Registration (Level 1 adult nurse) .
Degree in nursing studies or healthcare related subject.
Mentorship qualification/equivalent and or Practice Assessor training.

Management and leadership training.
Experience of care delivery.
Experience of leading a team/supporting junior staff.
Experience of coordinating care

Experience of working at Band 6 and/or Band 7.
Evidence of leadership qualities.
Awareness of national health and social care policy.
Ability to provide and receive complex, sensitive or contentious information, where persuasive, motivational, negotiating, training, empathic or reassurance skills are required.
Competent in the use of Microsoft office packages.
Evidence of competency in relation to nursing practices appropriate to the post.

Understanding of budget and financial control systems.
