Job Description

The Opportunity

There is an exciting opportunity for a Head of User-Centred Design to join the senior Digital Services team within the Digital, Data, and Technology (DDaT) Directorate within a UK-based regulatory body. Their vision is to be a catalyst for innovation and regulatory effectiveness, using digital, data, and technology to revolutionise regulation, making it more efficient, secure, transparent, and customer-centred. The successful candidate will lead from the front, translate strategy into sustainable solutions, and inspire a team of experts. The Digital team is transforming to become a modern, high-performing function with agility, user-centricity, and innovation embedded throughout. As Head of User-Centred Design, the role involves developing capabilities to empower this transformation.

The Role

As Head of User-Centred Design, this role will be responsible for:

  • Setting and communicating the UCD function's strategic direction. Acting as the 'Voice of the Saver, Scheme, and Employer,' ensuring inclusive and accessible services.
  • Developing the Research and Service Design capability. Leading multi-disciplinary teams to ensure a unified mission for user-centred design. Managing and build UCD skills to foster continuous development.
  • Building collaboration across disciplines and teams. Establishing productive relationships internally and externally, ensuring strategic alignment.
  • Shaping UCD/service design standards and processes. Ensuring effective development and delivery of user-focused digital products, driving improvements and efficiencies.
  • Creating a digital library of reusable patterns and components. Ensuring all digital development meets Government Service Standards and organisational codes of practice. Leading digital assurance and service standard compliance.

The Requirements

  • Leadership & Team Management : Exceptional skills in inspiring and managing diverse, multidisciplinary teams. Ability to prioritise and manage multiple projects and deadlines effectively.
  • Track Record : Successful implementation of digital services improving user experience and engagement.
  • Communication : Excellent skills in conveying the value of user-centred design to internal and external stakeholders.
  • User Research & UCD Expertise : Experience in conducting user research, usability testing, and analysing feedback. Expert understanding and experience in leading UCD initiatives from concept to deployment.
  • Technical Proficiency : Proficiency in design and prototyping tools; understanding of frontend development technologies and digital trends.
