We are excited to be able to invite applications for a Highly Specialist Clinical Psychologist (Band 8a) post on the Neonatal Unit at Burnley General Hospital.


This is a new development for the unit and one of several new Neonatal Psychology roles across the North-West region and across England. The postholder will be integrated into the neonatal MDT, bringing a psychological perspective to all aspects of the care of babies and their families.
Assessment, formulation and psychological intervention with a small number of families on the unit
Case consultation and collaborative care planning where families have more complex needs
Offering debriefs and other psychological support mechanisms to the staff team
Liaison with other services to create effective support pathways for families during their time on the unit and as they are discharged

We are looking for a passionate clinician, a strong team player and who can demonstrate an understanding of perinatal, parent-infant and family mental health in the context of complex physical health systems. The ideal candidate may have experience in either a paediatric or a perinatal/infant mental health setting. However, Neonatal Psychology is a relatively new and rapidly evolving specialism and we are keen to meet candidates who have a range of transferable clinical experiences to bring to the role.


The post will be based in the Neonatal Unit at Burnley General Hospital. It will also be part of a network of Neonatal Clinical Psychologists across the North-West region, coming together with peers and with the support of a Network Lead Psychologist, to develop services and expand on 'what good looks like' in this area.
The Unit opened in 2011, is purpose-built, state of the art, designed to the highest spec in line with standards set by the British Association of Perinatal Medicine (BAPM).


It is one of two Level 3 units in Lancashire and South Cumbria providing 24 hour inpatient services for NICU, HDU, Special Care (SCBU) and Transitional Care (TC) infants. The unit is equipped to provide care for babies born (
22 weeks) and caters to a delivery rate of over 6,200 babies born every year.


The post holder will receive clinical supervision from the network of Senior and Principal Clinical Psychologists within ELCAS, also part of the Division of Family Care. ELCAS, is a specialist provider of mental health services for Children, Young People and their families and is CQC Outstanding. ELCAS, is made up of a large team of Child Psychiatrists, Mental Health Practitioners, Specialist Therapists and Clinical Psychologists. Establishing a model of working psychologically on the unit and working under supervision to develop appropriate governance arrangements
Providing specialist psychological assessment and therapy for infants and their families. Offering training, advice and consultation on the psychological care of infants and families to non-psychologist colleagues
Offering psychological support to staff working in a complex and challenging environment
Working autonomously within professional guidelines and the overall framework of the teams policies and procedures
Collaborating with colleagues in the community to improve the pathway of support for families.
Utilising research skills for audit, policy and service development and research
Being regularly responsible for providing training placements for trainee Clinical Psychologists
Training & Qualifications
Doctoral level training in clinical psychology including specifically models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics and neuropsychology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology as accredited by the BPS.
Prequalification training or experience in research methodology, staff training and/or other fields of applied psychology.


Doctoral knowledge of clinical psychology including highly developed knowledge of lifespan developmental psychology, models of psychopathology, clinical psychometrics, neuropsychology, and two or more distinct psychological therapies.
Doctoral knowledge of research methodology, research design and complex multivariate data analysis as practiced within the clinical field of psychology.
Significant demonstrable experience of specialist psychological assessment and treatment of children, parents or families across the full range of care settings.
Evidence of continuing professional development as recommended by the British Psychological Society and HCPC.
Attended a formal training programme in supervision of trainee Clinical Psychologist.
Experience of teaching, training and/or supervision of Assistants or other professionals.

Experience of working clinically within one or more of: a paediatric psychology setting a perinatal or infant mental health setting a critical care setting
Knowledge of legislation and best practice guidance in relation to perinatal, infant, children and families' mental health
Experience of working with front line staff to promote psychologically informed care
Knowledge of the theory and practice of specialised psychological therapies in those groups with complex presentations e.g. dual diagnoses, additional disabilities, complex trauma
Experience of the application of clinical psychology in different cultural contexts.

Well-developed skills in the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, complex, highly technical and/or clinically sensitive information to young people, their families, carers and other professional colleagues both within and outside the NHS.
Skills in providing consultation to other professional and non-professional groups.

Ability to teach and train others, using a variety of complex multi-media materials suitable for presentations within public, professional and academic settings.
Able to drive and willing to use car for work purposes.
Legal status to work in UK.

Record of having published in peer reviewed or academic or professional journals and/or books.
