Working on highway and public transport projects (bus, tram, train)

Scheme ranging in size from small interventions through to major infrastructure projects (e.g. Junction improvements, new roads, local authority highway schemes, West Midlands Metro, HS2 etc.)

Regional Public Transport Projects (public transport interchanges, bus rapid transit, light-rail, tram-train etc.)

Active Travel Projects (walking and cycling interventions)

Contribute to projects in local communities


An apprentice will be supporting in learning the skills requiring to be successful in this role and would not be expected to pick up all of the above from day 1.

Travelling within the working day may be required occasionally, which will be on top of any travel required as part of your apprenticeship studies.

Operating in accordance with the Company's health, safety, environment and quality standards

Production of clear and well-presented reports, specifications, and other engineering documentation

Co-ordinating with the other professionals like architects, surveyors, contractors, etc.

As you gain experience and seniority, you will handle more complex work like managing other apprentices, more advanced design or analysis, work, management of the more complex projects, etc.

Develop knowledge of infrastructure design standards and best practice guidance

Deliver safe by design projects

Contribute towards sustainable development that will allow us to deliver Net Zero infrastructure

Learn new digital skills and use it to drive innovation in project delivery

Learn on the job with support for colleagues

Develop inter-personal skills

Ability to work independently when appropriate and contribute to problem solving

Application of the theory you learn at University to your project work

Supervising the production of drawings and 3D BIM models

Assist project managers and engineers with preparing technical reports and design, including the production of BIM models

Development of BIM compliant schemes

Undertake infrastructure design work in a variety of areas (site investigation, earthworks, alignments, junction design, public transport infrastructure, drainage, managing interfaces to foundation, structures, buildings and other assets)

Production of engineering reports, calculations and specifications
