Principal Technical Energy Project Manager, EMEA Energy & Water Resources
Job ID: 2750653 | Amazon Data Services UK Limited
The EMEA Energy & Water Resources team is focused on the delivery of secure, sustainable, clean and affordable energy and water infrastructure to support the needs of existing and future customers of AWS as they migrate and expand their interaction with the Cloud. The energy that AWS runs on comes in a variety of forms: electricity is the workhorse, powering data centres, drawn from a grid connection providing secure power and backed off with cost-effective energy supply and renewables credentials.
AWS Infrastructure Services (AIS) owns the design, planning, delivery, and operation of all AWS global infrastructure. We support all AWS data centers and all of the servers, storage, networking, power, and cooling equipment that ensure our customers have continual access to the innovation they rely on. We work on the most challenging problems, with thousands of variables impacting the supply chain — and we’re looking for talented people who want to help.
You’ll join a diverse team of software, hardware, and network engineers, supply chain specialists, security experts, operations managers, and other vital roles. You’ll collaborate with people across AWS to help us deliver the highest standards for safety and security while providing seemingly infinite capacity at the lowest possible cost for our customers.
Expected travel would be 40%, domestic and international.
In this role, you will develop energy strategies to scale our grid connected data centres, identify and analyse energy generation and storage technologies and innovations, support the design, execution and implementation of sustainable power solutions and maintain a deep understanding of barriers to growth and risks associated with the energy sector as we develop products and projects to support our customers.
The candidate will require to maintain a detailed understanding of energy markets across the EMEA region, and an in-depth appreciation of the variables impacting those markets from a technological, network (grid), policy and regulatory perspective. Developing commercial propositions and projects incorporating those new technologies as we transition to a cleaner, and greener, electricity grid will be a key output of this role. The optimal candidate will be a pragmatic visionary with a results orientated approach, experienced in developing and delivering pioneering projects, have an analytical skill set, strong financial acumen and a track record of working with utilities, regulators and developers across the energy industry.
Identify and develop innovative renewable generation projects and new technologies that support scaling our operations across EMEA.
# Identify systemic risks in power markets and identify mitigations in collaboration with partner teams.
# Identify opportunities for AWS to stimulate the transition to a cleaner grid in delivery of growth to support our customers across the EMEA region.
# Work with Amazon partner teams to support the development of strategic energy sourcing opportunities.
# Identify and deliver energy innovation projects that reduce cost, are scalable, supporting the power grids in which we operate.
# Identify and develop cost savings projects and initiatives related to energy infrastructure.
# Manage energy projects against plans and objectives to ensure commitments are met, delivering against cost savings and sustainability goals.
# Work with regulators to develop policies and guidelines enabling AWS strategies and objectives.
# Support consultation response on energy policy with AWS Public policy across the EMEA region.

15+ years of experience working across utility / energy / consultancy power systems businesses with a track record of delivering projects in power systems and grid infrastructure, renewable power generation, and power trading or energy procurement.
# Proven understanding of power market design and energy markets, with the ability to structure and formulate investment thesis for new technologies.
#7+ years of demonstrated experience leveraging analytical skill set to analyze the implications of electrical grid infrastructure systems, energy policies, regulations, and utility tariffs.
#7+ years of demonstrated experience managing multiple simultaneous projects requiring frequent communication, organization, time management, and problem-solving skills.

Degree in relevant discipline, with Masters (MBA/MSc) or relevant post-graduate professional qualification.
# Demonstration of experience in the development and delivery of projects at a utility scale of renewable generation or storage, energy innovation projects and infrastructure development.
# Experience working with policymakers, public utility commissions and other energy regulators.
# Experience of IT infrastructure, data centres and cloud services.
# Business language is English, with an ability to converse in German, Spanish, Swedish or French advantageous.
