We are seeking a skilled and enthusiastic individual to join the Cellular Pathology Department as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist/Deputy IT Lead. The post holder will primarily deputise for the Cellular Pathology IT Lead with the management of the departmental IT team. This encompases being responsible for system administration and advanced technical troubleshooting.

The post holder will be required to maintain the practical knowledge of the departmental systems as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist alongside the role of Deputy IT Lead.

An innovative department, we were the first laboratory in the UK digitally scanning all surgical slides and the first to introduce automated tissue sectioners to the UK. We are a regional Cellular Pathology Genomics Centre and pilot site for the Cancer Vaccine Launch Pad. The department has appointed a Transformation Lead to support with development of the service and is also supported by a Pathology Technology & Innovation Lead.

Main duties of the job

The primary function of this role will be as the Deputy Cell Path IT Lead. The postholder will provide expert advice in relation to identifying, evaluating and developing systems that meet user requirements. Provide Line Management to the specialist teams focused on project delivery and transition to the Business as Usual (BAU) IT service. Attend Meetings when required and liaise with key stakeholders. To provide expert advice on identifying and managing specialist resources in order to deliver projects from conception to BAU.

As a specialist biomedical scientist, you will be a fully competent member of the

department. Normally working as part of a team, you will be expected to perform a wide range of specialist technical investigations. At other times you may be required to work alone and independently, for example when working on-call. Working in different sections of the department you will have the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute towards the provision of an accurate and timely service for patients. You will be expected to apply professional judgements and specialist skills to technically complex and sometimes difficult situations.

Within the team you may be required to organize the tasks of support workers. You will be required to communicate highly complex information, often related to patient management and care, to colleagues, healthcare staff and other organizations.

The department provides Histopathology, Non Gynae Cytology, Andrology, Muscle, Nerve, Immunohistochemistry, Molecular, and Mortuary services for Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust and surrounding primary care centres. We are a well-equipped and innovative department being the first laboratory in the UK digitally scanning 100% of surgical slides, also introducing the UK's first automated tissue sectioners. We process circa 58,000 surgical cases, 2,000 autopsy cases and 6000 non-gynaecological cytology cases per annum. We are a continually improving department, striving for high quality staff and processes. As a training hospital we serve to expand the knowledge and skills of all staff. Job responsibilities

PRINCIPAL DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

- To maintain registered status as a biomedical scientist with the Health Care Professions Council

- To perform appropriate technical laboratory procedures and tasks that are consistent with the job holders levels of knowledge, skills and experience.

- To remain competent in all sections of the department and to perform tasks accurately and in accordance with departmental standard operating procedures.

- To enter, manage, retrieve and interpret complex patient information using the laboratory computer system.

- To communicate accurately sensitive and / or highly complex information to users of the service in a manner that is in accordance with departmental procedures. This may include providing specialist clinical technical advice to clinical teams

- To assist in the training of laboratory support staff, more junior biomedical scientists, clinical and medical staff.

- To actively participate in the laboratory quality assurance programme

- To participate in laboratory audit processes, risk assessments and support appropriate clinical trials involving the laboratory.

- To participate in equipment testing and adaptation as a function of service development

- To contribute to general departmental management, for instance, by producing rotas, assisting in the ordering, receipt and control of consumables

  • Extensive knowledge and Post registration experience within the speciality
  • Extensive knowledge of IT and clinical systems within the pathology
  • Able to recognise system failures and errors and the need to report adverse events in the event of such errors and failures
  • Have knowledge and understanding of current national legislation and guidelines relevant to the speciality

  • Degree (or equivalent) suitable for HCPC registration.
  • HCPC Registered biomedical scientist.
  • IBMS Specialist portfolio or equivalent experience (2006 registration onwards)
  • Competence in a wide range of complex laboratory procedures Participation in relevant CPD schemes
  • Willingness to undertake other formal study and in-house training
