An opportunity has arisen in the Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust for a permanent Band 7 senior clinical scientist role at WTE in the blood sciences lab.
Main duties of the job
You will be required to be HCPC registered, or close to registration, as a Clinical Scientist and to have completed (or be near completion) of a post-graduate training programme in biochemistry ( STP or equivalent). You are expected to have good scientific, analytical and clinical advisory skills, to support the technical lab staff, alongside good communication and team working skills. A significant part of your role will involve ensuring lab quality is maintained and the clinical appropriateness of our testing though audit and clinical liaison. Under supervision of more senior staff members, you will also have the opportunity to support major projects including verification of a new lab information management system and installation of new analysers. In addition to your daily work you would be expected to support the Duty Biochemist rota which includes participation in weekend working.

You will be joining a team of 6 consultants (1 Chemical Pathologist, 5 Consultant Clinical Scientists) and around 10 other clinical staff (clinical scientists and chemical pathologists) across our various biochem labs, providing support towards achieving FRCPath pt 1.

To provide a comprehensive scientific service (analytical and advisory) as a clinical scientist in the department to medical and other healthcare professionals within Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, primary care and mental health trusts.
To maintain an area of specialised knowledge and take responsibility for provision of scientific services in that area.

Essential
To have a thorough knowledge of human biochemistry and chemistry, including metabolic processes, physiology and pharmacology. To have a good knowledge of analytical methods, quality assurance and problem solving. To have a good basic knowledge of metabolic medicine including inherited disorders, endocrinology and disease states. To have a basic knowledge of managerial procedures in general. To have developed analytical (technical) skills in general areas. To have developed ability to deduce probability from a range of opinions. Able to conduct Research and Development Activities. Developing a clinical awareness beyond the context of own speciality. Able to advise medical and nursing staff on investigations and interpretations of biochemical and metabolic processes (where necessary with back up from more senior staff) Able to advise on aspects of service provision and development. Able and confident to challenge established views. Able to recognise patterns of abnormality and relate them to clinical situations and assess differential diagnoses.
Desirable
To have detailed knowledge of a specific speciality within medicine. Able to initiate and co-ordinate R & D activities. Able to conduct Audit of services.
Qualifications
Essential
First Degree in Biochemistry or Chemistry. OR alternative qualifications AND experience externally assessed as being equivalent. Masters Degree or PhD in Biochemistry Clinical Biochemistry. OR assessed equivalent level of knowledge and expertise within speciality of clinical biochemistry.

To have completed a formal post graduate training programme approved as appropriate for registration together with supervised in service experience totalling 3 years. OR to have undertaken alternative training and supervised in service experience totalling 6 years as appropriate for registration. Registration as a clinical scientist with Health Care Professions Council.

To have undertaken training and gained experience in a specific sub speciality.
