The British Library is one of the greatest libraries in the world. It preserves the nation’s intellectual memory for the future and makes it available to everyone for research, inspiration and enjoyment. It is the custodian of the UK’s collection of published, written, and digital content, with a vast and growing collection of 170 million items. It supports enterprise through access to specialist information, enabling businesses to innovate and grow. It also operates the world’s largest document delivery service. It is a creative, learning organisation, working with new technologies to enable innovative approaches to research, and to open up access to its unique collection.
The British Library shares its collections through its Reading Rooms at the iconic London campus, and at Boston Spa in Yorkshire. Through its Living Knowledge Network of more than thirty public libraries, the British Library inspires audiences across the UK with a diverse cultural programme of exhibitions and displays, creating unique experiences. The British Library also plays an influential role in the international community of libraries, supporting international relations, working with partners to advance knowledge and foster collaborative dialogue.
The Board is seeking to appoint an outstanding new Chief Executive to join the organisation in 2025. At a time of continuous disruption and evolution in the global information system, and abundant opportunity and risk in new technology, the job requires vision, leadership and prioritised delivery. The incoming Chief Executive will be focused on delivering The British Library’s ambitious 2023-2030 Knowledge Matters strategy. They will oversee large scale capital development, lead digital transformation and foster a thriving, inclusive culture across the organisation’s multi-disciplinary staff. Their leadership will continue to build the Library’s reputation with multiple stakeholders including government, donors, academia, and with other cultural institutions in the UK and internationally.
This is without doubt one of the most exciting Chief Executive opportunities in the public realm, blending complex entrepreneurial, service delivery, sector development and public benefit agendas.
