Consultant in Histology
County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest integrated care providers in England, serving a population of around 600,000 people. We are a high performing organisation with a track record of success.
The department is recruiting to increase the clinical workforce. We are have a vacancy for a consultant Histopathologist to join our substantive Consultant team.
We are happy to consider specialised working and want new, dynamic team members to bring their skills to further develop a future proof consultant workforce and shared service vision. Although we report a range of general pathology, our expertise and specialism is focused on Breast, GI, skin pathology as our main focus.
We are in aided in our service delivery by Digital pathology. The department is supportive of all staff and we will provide an opportunity for off-site reporting and flexible working.
Main duties of the jobThe appointee would have significant autonomous Histology dissection and reporting experience and independent dissection and reporting of histology slides will comprise the most significant part of their role.
This is a general Histopathology consultant post but with an option of semi-specialised team working. Our main areas of interest are: gastrointestinal, breast and skin Pathology. Other areas of knowledge such as respiratory, lower gynaecological cancer and head and neck would be useful.
They would be expected to work closely with other consultants within the Trust, promoting and maintaining the high quality of these services.
The appointee will be based at the laboratory of the University Hospital of North Durham (UHND) where the Histology Department concentrates provision of the service (but supports other sites within the Trust, particularly at Darlington).
The clinical team are well supported by our advanced practitioner program and a large onsite histology laboratory. The post holder would be expected to work closely with consultants within the Trust, and with Advanced Practice BMS and other lab staff, promoting and maintaining the high quality of these services.

Job description
Job responsibilitiesThe basic contract is for 10 programmed activities.
Whole-time 10 programmed activities split into 8.5 DCC, and 1.5 SPA.
There will need to be a discussion with the post holder regarding the final job plan arrangements, prior to commencement of the appointment.
A workload management system is in place based on the RCPath points work allocation system. If the post holder elects to undertake a part-time contract they will be required to devote substantially the whole of the professional time to the duties of the post. If you wish to work part time you will still be considered for the post with an adjusted Job Plan to be developed.
As it is envisaged that it will be increasingly difficult to accommodate all future advances in specialist cancer treatments and interventions at each of our main hospital sites, the Trust is actively engaged with neighbouring organisations in developing local Sustainability and Transformation Plans but with a move to specialist pathology reporting in a digital environment, the Department sees itself in a strong position to support any such changes.
We have a strong training culture and good experience of developing clinical staff to support completion of training of new consultants. We are also involved in training laboratory staff including Advanced BMS Practitioner roles and any successful candidates may participate in supporting this training programme.
