Community Engagement Manager

WaterBear is a community storytelling network that brings entertainment and action together. Through award-winning storytelling, curating opportunities to learn and act, and building a global community, we define a new category in media that aims to create global impact through collective agency.
We’re looking for a dynamic Community Engagement Manager to help bring our brand to life offline and online. In this role, you'll support and drive our community strategy, making sure WaterBear is showing up in all the right places, with all the right people, and at all the right times. This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a fast-paced, purpose-driven environment, has a knack for building strong relationships, and knows how to make things happen – all while staying on time and on budget.
Reporting into the Director of Community & Product Marketing , the Community Engagement Manager will focus on driving WaterBear’s growth by inserting WaterBear into culture, tapping into key passion points, and meeting our community where they engage with each other.
We strongly encourage people of colour, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer and non-binary people, veterans, parents, and individuals with disabilities to apply. WaterBear is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes everyone to our team. If you need reasonable adjustments at any point in the application or interview process, please let us know.
The Role:
At WaterBear, community isn’t just a buzzword – it’s at the heart of everything we do. We’re passionate about creating real, meaningful relationships with our members and partners and we want to inspire positive change to help everyone feel a bit better about the future. We believe in the power of growing an authentic community of imperfect activists who enjoy coming together for impact at scale. And that’s where the role of Community Engagement Manager comes in
Responsibilities include:
Offline Community Strategy & Engagement:
- Develop and execute a robust offline community strategy that 1) brings WaterBear’s brand to life, 2) boosts retention, and 3) supports commercial success.
- Develop strong relationships while building credibility and visibility with community-based organisations that align with WaterBear’s values and goals, starting from the UK. Scout and onboard new communities, while keeping an open dialogue with existing ones to ensure seamless on-and-offline partnerships and activations.
- Equip partners and our internal teams (eg: commercial, partnerships, etc) with the tools they need to reinforce the WaterBear brand and presence and help them execute community-led activations that connect with citizens and create a greater impact.
- Identify and build relationships with strategic WaterBear ambassadors, creating and managing a portfolio of friends of the brand that help us engage with strategic communities of interest.
- Map out key moments throughout the year for WaterBear to engage with communities authentically and impactfully, both online and offline (think music festivals, outdoor events, Reddit communities, and more). Be the face of WaterBear at those key events, representing the brand and fostering connections with community groups.
Event Strategy & Execution:
- Design and execute a compelling event strategy that engages WaterBear members both online and offline, including tactics that drive engagement to our platform (website / app)
- Organise and facilitate owned and third-party events, including volunteering activities, film screenings, panel discussions, webinars, workshops, environmental events and more.
- Design and host weekly/monthly WaterBear community meetups in London.
- Be at ease hosting online and offline events, representing WaterBear at key community and industry gatherings.
- Pitch ideas to potential partners that help us reach our communities where they are – outdoor getaways, cinemas, festivals, conferences, you name it.
- Build a network of event partners (locations, drink brands, MCs, food brands, etc.) who share the WaterBear ethos and values and help us bring to life community activations that our members will not want to miss.
What We’re Looking For:
- Well connected: You’ve got world-class people skills and love meeting new folks. You’re a natural human connector who thrives on building relationships. You’re already plugged into the climate and impact space, especially in London/UK.
- Community Engagement Expertise: You’ve got 4+ years of experience building communities both online and offline, organising events, and leading activations. You know who to involve and when, and you’re a pro at setting people up for success with clear information and expectations.
- Mission-Aligned: You live and breathe WaterBear’s mission, ethos, and values – both at work and in life. You have a sharp eye for what’s on-brand for WaterBear and what’s not and ensure the best outcome of any of our community gatherings (owned or through third parties).
- Entrepreneurial spirit: You’re a 50/50 thinker – part strategic mastermind, part creative dynamo. You’re driven, motivated, and understand how your work impacts the bigger picture. Plus, you’re not afraid to learn from mistakes.
- Independent and Results-oriented : You are not afraid to own projects and run them independently. Your manager will be based in Amsterdam, which means you’ll be able to run on your own feet while ensuring constant alignment with the rest of the team on the projects you are working on.
- Flexible & Resilient: You thrive on positive change, manage stress like a pro, and can adapt to shifting priorities.
- Based in London (or surroundings). You’re ready to dive into the vibrant UK community scene.
