Salary: Circa £60k with excellent competitive benefits

Contract type: TfL

Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.

Transport for London (TfL) Engineers are always looking forward. Join us in one of our Transport Infrastructure Engineering teams and, as well as maintaining legacy assets, you’ll deliver new systems and solutions. There’s more to it than tubes, roads, buildings and bridges. This is about connecting communities and creating opportunities, so we’re ready for the 21st century and beyond.

Day-to-day, your focus will be on delivering structural designs, assessments, drawings, specifications, calculations and enhancements that keep vital and innovative projects moving. You’ll make sure assets are safe, serviceable, reliable and compliant; develop your own solutions; and be a trusted source of structural engineering advice for your team and the wider TfL, including our Heads of Engineering Delivery.

The successful candidate is expected to bring technical expertise in structural engineering, especially in association with Bridges & Structures design/assessments and have the following essential knowledge, skills and experience:

Knowledge:

  • You are expected to be a Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer or possess equivalent knowledge and experience
  • Significant knowledge and experience in undertaking Structural Designs and/or Structural Assessments of various bridge types, covered ways, buildings and other railway/transportation related structures.
  • Significant knowledge of supporting construction, operation and maintenance, repair and strengthening of structures
  • A deep understanding of legislation, technical standards, health, safety and environmental considerations and industry best practice related to structural design/assessment, and principles of risk management and value engineering.
  • A deep understanding of design and assessment quality assurance processes.

Skills:

  • Ability to lead and undertake the design and/or assessment, repair and strengthening of Civil Engineering and building structures. TfL/Railway related experience will be desirable.
  • Ability to support and supervise graduates and apprentices in their development.
  • Ability to carry out hand calculations and use of analysis/design software.
  • Ability to use MS suites applications.
  • Ability to produce sketches/instructions and supervise CAD drawings production.

Experience:

  • Significant experience in Bridges & Structures designs and/or assessments, construction, operation and maintenance
  • Experience of providing site technical advice, leading site visits, surveys and inspections; and producing reports for such
  • Experience of producing optioneering/feasibility studies and the production and evaluation of structural concepts independently.
  • Experience of applying subject matter expertise to resolve complex technical challenges.
  • Broad experience of applying engineering judgement to support large programmes, enhancement projects or operational activities.
  • Experience of building relationships and influencing stakeholders at all levels within and outside TfL.

It’s important you bring a passion for the TfL Vision and strategy too. That’s because, wherever you join us, you’ll explore work of unparalleled scale, scope and variety across a unique range of projects, as you build your career and expertise. So come and bring on tomorrow, as an Engineer at TfL.

We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. We want to represent the city we serve, which will help us become a more innovative and efficient organisation. We also use anonymising software that removes identifying information from CVs and cover letters to make the process fair.

Application Process
Please apply using your most recent CV and Cover Letter. (Word format only)

We encourage you to apply for the position that is most relevant to your existing skills, knowledge and experience as shortlisting is carried out on the basis of how well you meet the criteria for the role.
