Introduction

Barrington James are currently seeking an innovative and dedicated Research and Development (R&D) Chemist to join clients our dynamic team. This role is pivotal in developing cutting-edge, biologically-based products aimed at opening up new and high-value market opportunities. The ideal candidate will bring a strong background in chemistry or polymer materials science, with a special focus on biopolymers, and will have a proven track record in transitioning products from the research phase to commercial success. This position offers the opportunity to make significant contributions to our product portfolio while working in a collaborative environment that values safety, creativity, and scientific excellence.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Formulate biological-based products for new, high-value markets.
  • Lead scale-up processes from R&D to commercial production.
  • Analyze key features such as deacetylation levels, molecular size, and viscosity.
  • Engage with clients to understand their requirements and tailor products accordingly.
  • Plan and execute research activities, including designing experiments, monitoring progress, and reporting results.
  • Implement safety protocols to ensure a secure work environment for all team members.
  • Maintain laboratory standards, including organization, cleanliness, and inventory management.

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Holder of a degree in Chemistry or Polymer Materials Science, with a strong preference for expertise in biopolymers.
  • At least 4 years of experience in developing market-ready products for industries such as food, cosmetics, medical devices, or pharmaceuticals.
  • Proficient in analytical methods like NMR, GPC, FTIR, LCMS, and Ash analysis, with the ability to interpret results effectively.
  • Skilled in planning research, designing experiments, and reporting findings both verbally and in writing.
  • Familiar with creating and adhering to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP), Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations, and Risk Assessments.
  • Strong inclination towards teamwork in dynamic and demanding settings, with a commitment to safety.

Additional Requirements:

  • The role involves travel between two sites: an R&D lab in Clydebank, near Glasgow, and a manufacturing facility in Glenrothes, Fife. Travel will be managed accordingly.
  • Occasional visits to customer sites for collaborative development projects are required.
