This role provides the unique opportunity to take leadership of Dance in a high performing and high-profile department, working under the Director of Creative and Performing Arts. The teaching and provision for Dance at the Archer Academy is held with high regard, enabling outstanding opportunities and outcomes for our students.

Creativity and the opportunity to inspire our student’s creativity is core to the values of the school. The role of Head of Dance is to secure an outstanding dance curriculum but also to provide a wide range of enrichment and extracurricular opportunities that enable students to flourish and embrace their talents.

The Dance programme should focus on the development of an ambitious offer which stretches and challenges all our students to promote a culture of inclusion and achievement for all. The successful candidate must be a strong performer in their own right, in the classroom and/or other platforms, with theoretical knowledge to support students learning. The ability to lead by example is at the heart of our ethos, and the candidate must be a role model for the department and students.

The school has large numbers of students taking Dance to GCSE. Our curriculum design promotes and protects opportunities for the arts from Year 7, with enhanced provision in Year 9 and across the GCSE choices process. GCSE results are consistently outstanding. In 2023, Dance results saw 50% of all grades at a 7+ and 13% at grade 9. Dance is an incredibly popular post 16 option with a number of students securing places at prestigious specialist schools and conservatoires. We currently teach the AQA Dance programme.

Alongside the curriculum, a rich extracurricular offer further supports our students in realising their potential. Opportunities include boys dance, choreography and technique classes as well as workshops with external professional companies. The school has a well-established reputation locally and nationally in Dance. This year we have already secured regional 1st place in the Great British Dance off and London Youth Games, with our junior and senior competition squads going to the National finals in both. Alongside these accomplishments, we host a range of superb school performances to celebrate the success of all out students – recent highlights include the annual Dance showcase, with over 60 students taking part and our end of year show 2023, Matilda.

The school has two specialist studios and we also work closely with the Finchley Youth Theatre. We are currently in the process of fundraising to build an additional studio and hope to commence work later in 2024.
