Cloud FinOps Lead / Practitioner

6 months Contract

£625 day rate (paid via an FCSA Umbrella)

Home based with travel to Northampton as needed

We’re working with a leading financial services organisation in Northampton whose business is undergoing a strategic transformation by embracing Cloud technologies. They are currently in the final stages of migrating technologies to the cloud with the current programme due to exit soon. As part of the journey to cloud technologies they have adopted the FinOps framework to not only manage costs but also to embed practices, tools, and culture into the organisation to drive collaboration between engineering, business teams and finance.

Having commenced their FinOps journey they understand their maturity position and are aligning to the FinOps principles and domains, recently obtaining FinOps practitioner status for 2 resources.

This role is to continue to build on the FinOps capabilities delivered to date. Working with senior stakeholders to shape and grow the FinOps practice to create and promote a culture of cost accountability and awareness of their cloud consumption. Using industry experience of embedding FinOps into a business, this role will create a FinOps practice that covers all aspects of FinOps framework and aligning them to the needs of the business. Delivering a FinOps practice that delivers value and insight for the onward journey into cloud consumption and cost management. You will also interface directly with our Cloud Managed Service Provider, challenging the MSP services and recommendations. In addition, keeping Cloud industry initiatives in focus to benefit from new advancements in Cloud technology. This role is a hybrid working opportunity. Whilst we can be flexible on location across the UK, there will be travel required to our Head Office in Northampton.

What you will do.

  • You will be responsible for creating and managing a FinOps Road map of activities that will drive accountability, collaboration and cost optimisation based on business value. Recommending the maturity requirement of the FinOps practice required, which will inform the target FinOps operating model.
  • Partnering with Engineering, Operations and Finance to develop and evolve a high-level Fin Ops strategy rollout across the business.
  • Implement process and policy to ensure the FinOps practice is aligned to the FinOps framework and business policy and governance, which should be demonstrated by the provision of the following domains and associated capabilities.
  • 1. Understand Cloud Usage & Cost
  • 2. Quantify Business Value.
  • 3. Optimise Cloud usage & Cost.
  • 4. Manage the FinOps Practice.
  • Ensuring policies and process are produced that deliver value and insight.
  • Provide solid FinOps industry experience and apply to the FinOps journey.
  • Build and embed real-time cloud cost dashboards and forecasts. Develop and embed Cloud costs KPI’s, scorecards and standard metrics.
  • Ensure monthly reporting provides valuable insights into spend versus budget at a granular level, using existing manual process, whilst identifying efficiencies, process improvement and automation.
  • Work with FinOps personas to understand requirements, stakeholder interactions and paths for information, to ensure FinOp data is accessible and timely to support decision making, as well as drive ownership and cost optimisation.
  • Create and deliver targeted stakeholder presentations, dashboards and data visualisations that communicate key observations, learning and recommendations.
  • Develop and lead training / education opportunities to reinforce the collaborative working across teams. To understand the role of personas and the collaborative nature of the operating model.
  • Promote a FinOps culture and introduce tools / techniques to enable accountability of costs to be driven to the direct consumers.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Previous experience of FinOps practice set up and embedding into a business.
  • Strong written/verbal communication at Senior Exec level.
  • Good knowledge of FinOps tooling products.
  • Demonstrable experience within a Cloud FinOps/Cloud spend role within a large professional environment.
  • Strong understanding of public cloud players (e.g., Azure), their product portfolio and commercial models.
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of Azure cloud services and billing semantics.
  • Experience working in a regulated environment.
  • Understanding of the key drivers, concepts, and language that Finance, Procurement, Service Management and/or Technology teams use day-to-day.
  • Proven experience of working in a fast-paced environment, managing multiple initiatives in parallel.

You will need to successfully complete the necessary financial services background screening which includes criminal records, credit history, 5 years work referencing and also ID and RTW checks. Your acceptance depends on these being completed to the satisfaction of the client.
