Museums Galleries Scotland (MGS) is the National Development Body for Scotland’s museums and galleries. We are seeking an experienced professional to lead our work to clearly communicate the positive value and impact ofthe museums and galleries sector. You will do this by developing and leading advocacy campaigns and activitythat make a strong case for Scotland’s museums and galleries sector to influence a range of audiences andstakeholders including Government Officials, Government Ministers, MSPs, relevant Committees, relevant fundersand other key organisations and influencers.

Politically astute, the Senior Advocacy and Public Affairs Manager possesses strong communication and influencingskills, using information, research and data to build a political and public case for the sector and informevidence-based advocacy messaging and activity.

Being able to navigate and effectively communicate complex issues that implicate the wider culture and heritagesector in Scotland will be essential. This is especially vital as parts of our sector face profound budgetchallenges, many navigating rising operational costs and workforce pressures while also striving to adapt toensure relevance to communities and users. As national development body, MGS needs to advocate clearly andeffectively on their behalf.

Objectives

The Scottish Railway Preservation Society (SRPS) owns the Museum of Scottish Railways and the Bo’ness and KinneilRailway and manages the core collection that has been Recognised as being of National Significance through theScottish Government’s Recognition Scheme. Most of the collection is owned by the Scottish Railway MuseumCollections Trust (SRMCT) and SRPS manages it on behalf of the owner. Visitors to the Bo’ness and KinneilRailway can see parts of the collection and other rolling stock in operation on the railway and visit the Museumof Scottish Railways.

The post holder will work with our collection to enhance continually its presentation, documentation, storage and useof a searchable online collections database. There will also be a requirement to work closely with the Board andwith a team of volunteers. The post will be supervised by an appropriate member of the Board of the SRPS.

Key Responsibilities

  • To represent the interests of the Museum of Scottish Railways within the SRPS, including by attending meetingsof the Board and other management committees.
  • To manage the staffing, maintenance and running of theMuseum.
  • To manage the delivery of the customer experience in visiting the Museum.
  • To lead andadvise the team who maintain the collection.
  • To ensure the Board is provided with informedrecommendations on acquisitions, loans and disposals.
  • To ensure the creation of a searchable collectiondatabase on our website.
  • To facilitate public access to the collection, including through management ofthe museum’s social media accounts and website.
  • To ensure compliance with the Museum AccreditationScheme and with Scottish Government’s Recognition guidelines.
  • To manage the interactions of the Museum,including interfacing with the Scottish Railway Museum Collections Trust, particularly with regard to ownershipof vehicles.
  • To represent the SRPS within national museum-supporting organisations.
  • To identifyopportunities to apply for grants which would enhance the Museum’s ability to operate or improve the customerexperience and then direct the production of grant applications.
  • To manage projects and contractorsinvolved in developing the Museum’s infrastructure as it expands
  • To develop library facilities on siteat the Museum
  • To proactively identify projects, and take forward ongoing projects

Qualifications and Experience

  • Relevant experience of working with a museum collection, and with staff and volunteers
  • Practicalexperience of running a successful team, and managing budgets
  • Flexible, confident approach with theability to work independently or as part of a team
  • Demonstrable capacity todelegate
  • Demonstrable capacity to commit to developing self and colleagues
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • High standard of written and spokenEnglish
  • Confident IT skills with experience of collections management systems
  • Familiarity withthe use of collections management databases
  • Applicants should be educated to degree level or equivalent in a relevant subject
  • Interest in Scottish Railway History
  • Experience of working with Adlib
  • Experience of project management
  • Knowledge of preventative conservation
  • Knowledge of the Scottish Museum-supporting environment, including of grant giving organisations, and potential for raising funds

You will support the Head of Centre, and as part of the Big Noise Govanhill Senior Team, to ensure high qualityprocedures, processes and operational functions are embedded to maximise the success of the programme. A skilledproject manager, you will also have experience of working with communities and volunteers, and will have apassion for music, along a belief in the benefits that a social programme such as Big Noise / Sistema Scotlandcan have.

This is a permanent part-time job share post, working 21 hours per week, Monday to Wednesday, with flexibility towork either 9am-5pm, or 10am-6pm.

  • Bring organisations together to coordinate their activities and offers, to add value to what already exists and identify what additional activities are needed.
  • Deliver a range of walking, wheeling, and cycling activities, from pre-school and family cycling activities to health and heritage walks, adaptive cycling sessions for disabled people, confidence building sessions and learn to ride lessons for every age and ability level.
  • Provide access to a range of cycles for people to try on short or long-term loan, supporting individuals to find a cycle and support that works for them and signposting them to partners that can provide funding for purchases.
  • Work with local organisations to upskill and build the capacity of volunteers to deliver activities in the community.
