North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust (NCIC) is seeking to recruit a dynamic and enthusiastic consultant colorectal surgeon. This is a permanent substantive post. They will assist in the development of a robotic colorectal surgical programme in the trust. The successful candidate will also participate in the delivery of a comprehensive colorectal, general and emergency surgery service. The post is based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle and West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven. The Cumberland Infirmary is the hub for all major emergency and elective surgery. The emergency general surgery on-call rota is a 1 in 12 commitment based at the Cumberland Infirmary. We operate a dual on-call system during working hours to ensure that the management of complex emergency surgical patients is fully supported.
NCIC is a clinically led organisation and we will expect the appointee to be involved in the clinical governance and leadership of the general surgical department and wider trust. The appointee will have responsibility for the work and supervision of junior medical staff and allied health care professionals.
Providing comprehensive colorectal surgery service, including surgical management of colorectal cancers, inflammatory bowel disease and other anorectal conditions.
Supporting the emergency general surgery on-call rota is a 1 in 12 commitment based at the Cumberland Infirmary. We operate a dual on-call system during working hours to ensure that the management of complex emergency surgical patients is fully supported.
North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust is a clinically led organisation where our clinicians define the strategic priorities. It was formed in October 2019 following integration of acute and community services. Our vision is to build a new integrated health and care system.
We provide acute hospital services at both the Cumberland Infirmary and West Cumberland Hospital, including pediatrics, obstetrics and A& E services. We provide a midwifery-led maternity service at Penrith Community Hospital. We also support a wide range of clinical and diagnostic services located in nine community hospitals across North Cumbria.
We are embedded into our community, serving a population of 320,000 people living across North Cumbria, parts of Northumberland and Southern Scotland. Carlisle benefits from good road and rail links to Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Newcastle and London. However, we also serve remote and rural communities spread over a wide geographical area including the Lake District National Park, Solway Coast, and North Pennines. Housing is affordable and the local schools are excellent.
Imperial College London and the University of Cumbria in collaboration with NCIC are establishing the Pears Cumbria School of Medicine, a graduate entry medical school with the first intake starting in August 2025. Imperial College have also committed to investing in a Cumbrian research hub to increase the volume of clinical research in the region.

Full Registration with the General Medical Council
Entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview), relevant CESR or European Community Rights
Higher degree (MD, PhD, etc)

Clinical experience and competence in colorectal surgery
Independent in laparoscopic colorectal surgery
Experience of robotic colorectal surgery
Relevant colorectal surgical fellowship.
Ability to manage the efficient and smooth running of a colorectal service.
Undertaken management training course
Experience of service improvement, delivering change and team leadership.
Commitment to help lead the implementation of a robotic colorectal programme at within the trust
Experience of and commitment to teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff.

Experience of teaching of non-medical health professionals.
Commitment to assist in the training of- a robotic theatre team and first-assistant
Experience of and commitment to medical audit.
Ability to supervise postgraduate research and audit
Ability to be an advocate for the Robotic surgical programme within the trust and externally
