A fantastic school in Kings Lynn are seeking an experienced and passionate Head of English to lead the English department and drive excellence in teaching and learning. The successful candidate will play a key role in developing and implementing a dynamic English curriculum that meets the diverse needs of our students and promotes literacy, communication skills, and a love of learning. As a specialist SEMH school, they are committed to delivering a tailored curriculum and personalized support to help students thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Responsibilities for Head of Department - English:

  • Lead the planning, development, and delivery of the English curriculum across Key Stages 3, 4, and 5, ensuring alignment with national standards and the specific needs of students with SEMH.
  • Provide strong leadership and direction to the English department, inspiring and motivating staff to deliver high-quality teaching and learning experiences that engage and challenge students.
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching and learning in English, using data and assessment outcomes to inform planning, target setting, and intervention strategies.
  • Implement effective behaviour management strategies within English lessons, fostering a positive and inclusive learning environment where all students feel valued and supported.
  • Foster positive relationships with students, parents/carers, and external stakeholders, communicating effectively about students' progress, achievements, and areas for development.
  • Lead by example as a reflective practitioner, actively engaging in ongoing professional learning and research to enhance teaching practice and curriculum provision.

Requirements (Head of Department - English):

  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and a relevant degree in English or a related subject.
  • Proven experience of teaching English at Key Stages 3, 4, and 5, preferably within a SEMH or SEN setting.
  • Sound knowledge of the national curriculum for English and current educational policies and initiatives, with a commitment to promoting the highest standards of literacy and communication.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive relationships with students, staff, parents/carers, and external partners.
  • Experience of leading curriculum development, assessment, and quality assurance processes within a school setting.
  • Understanding of SEMH and its impact on learning, with a compassionate and empathetic approach to supporting students with diverse needs.
