Summary

This is a project delivery role in the environmental consultancy space, based in York but working on client projects that are typically delivered virtually. Plenty of opportunity for flexible working and available on either a 4 or 5 days per week basis. £35k target salary, open to negotiation for more experienced candidates.


Specification

We are seeking an engaging, confident and competent person with solid experience in one or more areas of environmental science or environmental protection or regulation to help develop our internal delivery capability with regard to the broad range of environmental projects we take on. Recently we have worked with the following organisations, and our projects for these organisations have been quite different in form, ranging from carbon literacy training to data and information management, user research, economic appraisal, etc:


  • Joint Nature Conservation Committee
  • Natural England
  • Office for Environmental Protection
  • Defra
  • Public Health England
  • Natural Environment Research Council
  • York and North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership
  • NHS Net Zero FM department
  • Various local authorities
  • Universities


You should have some specialist, detailed knowledge of one or more of the following (or similar) areas - or less detailed knowledge of a greater number of areas.


  • Prior experience of working in or closely with the public sector, within an environmental policy or strategy area
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Qualitative research experience (interviews, workshops, analysis and synthesis)
  • Marine or terrestrial environmental science
  • Environmental impact assessment
  • Lifecycle assessment
  • Air quality, water quality, land contamination, pollution control
  • Waste management
  • Net zero strategy and/or carbon and energy management technical services
  • Ecological survey, ecological impact assessment
  • Other environmental consultancy


You should have these skills and credentials:


  • Proven report writing credentials (ideal candidates will be able to signpost us to published outputs, though these do not need to be via peer-reviewed journals, these could be industry reports etc).
  • Great interpersonal skills
  • Clear spoken and written communication
  • Competent planning skills - project management experience a benefit but formal qualifications not required. We are looking for someone with the ability to take accountability for a piece of work and ensure quality delivery
  • The ability to conduct research and learn new terminology, frameworks and skills on the job
  • Willingness to undertake work in an area you have no previous depth of experience in, drawing on the experience of others in your team and supplementing with self-motivated learning
  • The ability to lead a team that includes specialist subcontractors and freelancers to fill gaps in personal knowledge and skills
  • Good tech skills - you should easily get to grips with digital applications, understand and work with data confidently, etc.


Role context

We are a small but successful consultancy taking on a broad range of interesting projects. This role has been created to develop, maintain and continuously improve a delivery capability area for both client services and for internal projects. The following areas are the key responsibilities of the role, developing over time:


Immediate responsibilities

  • Management of service and project delivery
  • Be the premier expert for your nominated capability
  • Oversee consultants placed on client engagements and directly consult on critical client engagements
  • Manage and continuously improve the quality of output provided by your team (including subcontractors)
  • Be ultimately accountable for all deliverables produced by your capability area


Future responsibilities

  • Definition of services and products
  • Create and manage crystal clear definitions of services and products that fall within your nominated capability
  • Manage internal launches and reframing / reinforcement in collaboration with Commercial Managers
  • Research and implement new capabilities
  • Develop product and service roadmap
