Bookmark Reading Charity is seeking an exceptional Chair to lead our Board and help us deliver our ambitious three-year strategy to ensure every child can read.


About Bookmark


Since 2018, Bookmark has grown from supporting three schools in Camden to delivering over 124,000 one-to-one reading sessions in over 300 schools. We’ve also provided books, resources, and grants to help schools build a love of reading.


Our vision is simple: we want every child to read. Over the next three years, we will reach 500,000 children, partner with 1,000 schools, and deliver 165,000 one-to-one reading sessions, while creating a whole school reading culture in the UK’s most disadvantaged communities.


The Role


As Chair, you will:


  • Provide leadership to the Board, ensuring governance, transparency, and accountability.
  • Oversee the delivery of Bookmark’s strategic plan, working closely with the Chief Executive.
  • Support the charity’s growth by guiding strategy development, risk management, and performance evaluation.
  • Act as an ambassador for Bookmark, representing the charity at key events and meetings.
  • Lead efforts to recruit and retain a diverse Board and volunteer base to meet increasing school demand.


This role is transformative, offering an opportunity to advance educational and social outcomes through a data-driven, entrepreneurial approach.


What We’re Looking For


Essential:


  • Proven leadership experience with strategic and operational expertise.
  • Strong commitment to Bookmark’s mission and values.
  • Strong networking skills to benefit the charity.
  • Understanding of trusteeship and legal governance responsibilities.
  • A willingness to devote the necessary time and effort to conduct the role well, including travel and attending events out of normal working hours
  • Good, independent judgement
  • An ability to think creatively
  • A willingness to speak their mind


Highly Desirable:


  • Experience managing and leading senior leadership teams within a high growth, entrepreneurial environment.
  • Previous experience as a non-exec, chair or trustee.
  • Experience delivering services to the primary school sector.
  • An awareness of developments in the voluntary sector and areas of interest to the charity together with a passion for social change

Commitment

  • 15-20 hours per month, including quarterly Board meetings (in-person or remote).
  • Trustees serve a three-year term (renewable).
  • Reasonable expenses reimbursed.


This is a voluntary role, but the impact you will make on children’s lives is priceless.
