Salary: £80,000 + depending on experience plus executive benefits

What you’ll be doing:

  • Our priority is safety – whether an employee, supplier, or contractor. The role holder will spend their time working to make us safer every day and will be passionate and dedicated to visibly creating a safety culture inspiring our colleagues and suppliers to build safety into hearts and minds.
  • Inspiring, engaging and developing a team of health and safety professionals, ensuring resources are deployed to best effect and that talent is managed and developed
  • Leading the development and implementation of health and safety strategy, policy and objectives, communicating and driving them through the organisation and supply chain
  • Leading the development and implementation of innovative health and safety change programmes, embedding a culture of continuous improvement and the sharing of best practices working directly with our business areas and suppliers when necessary
  • Looking both forward and backward anticipating and reviewing trends and developing strategies and engagements to manage these.
  • Collaborating with line leaders within our business to understand key risks and putting in place programs to make us safer thus enabling leaders to effectively manage health and safety within their area of responsibility
  • Collaborating with key stakeholders, at all levels of the organisation as well as our onsite supplier partners, influencing them to integrate health and safety into their business processes and ensuring health and safety factors are appropriately considered during decision making, at strategic and operational level
  • Developing, maintaining and deploying a health and safety management system (including policies, processes and assurance) that meets the requirements of BAE Systems Operational Framework and International health and safety standards (such as ISO45001) and supports the achievement of organisational goals
  • Providing robust, impartial and independent health and safety assurance programmes for determining compliance with all relevant legal, BAE Systems Operational Framework and health and safety Management System requirements
  • Ensuring effective regulatory compliance for the Line of Business or Sector, and provide leadership for effective regulator engagement
  • Representing our business area at the relevant Functional Council, providing appropriate contribution to the making of health and safety policy decisions and consequential implementation of them

Your skills and experiences:

Essential skills:

  • Comprehensive and contemporary technical understanding of health and safety management standards and practice
  • Experienced health and safety professional with a strong understanding of health and safety requirements, internal and external best practice and able to bring their experience to articulate these in order to influence leadership teams and those in key roles in the organisation
  • High degree of stakeholder management and ability to communicate and inspire across many different levels of the organisation, sites, business areas and mix of suppliers and employees
  • Typically holds a minimum of five years post-qualification experience and more than ten years’ experience in applying health and safety knowledge and processes in work-related situations

Desirable skills:

  • Chartered membership of an appropriate professional health and safety institution

The SHE team:

This role is supporting Shared Services and Head office. There are not only office-based staff, but also staff and suppliers who are based on sites in manufacturing areas providing Facilities Management, Infrastructure programmes and Early Careers and skills programs.

You will have excellent exposure to all areas of BAE Systems in this capacity, which means there will be a lot of variation and no two days will be the same. You will have the chance to influence the team and the shared services strategy for SHE operations.
