Role title: KS3/KS4 English Teacher

Reports to: Head of School

Location: Manchester Road, Bolton

Salary from: £31,650

Our Values

At EdStart, our principal values are Progression—we are committed to helping every student achieve their fullest potential, regardless of their individual challenges. Further to this we uphold the values of Humanity, Togetherness, and Compassion, ensuring a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment for both students and staff.

About the Role

We are seeking a dedicated English Teacher to join our team, working with KS3 and KS4 students who face SEND and SEMH challenges. This is a rewarding opportunity to make a lasting impact on the academic and personal growth of students who may have faced barriers to learning in mainstream settings. Your role will be to inspire students in English while supporting their emotional and social development.

Key responsibilities:

  • To maintain a thorough and up-to-date knowledge of the teaching of your subject(s) and take account of wider curriculum and pastoral developments which are relevant to your work.
  • To plan tutorials, activities, lessons and sequences of lessons to meet students’ individual learning needs.
  • To use a range of appropriate strategies and follow schools policies for tutoring, teaching, behaviour management and classroom management
  • To do all you can, involving parents and other agencies, to ensure that as a result of your tutoring and teaching you promote the health, safety, economic wellbeing and achievement of your students.
  • To assess, monitor and record the progress of students in your teaching and tutorial groups and give them clear and constructive feedback.
  • To set well-grounded expectations for students in your teaching and tutorial groups using information about prior knowledge and previous attainment, making progress as good as or better than similar students nationally.
  • To take responsibility for your own professional development and use the outcomes to improve your tutoring and teaching and your students’ learning.
  • To make an active contribution to the policies, aspirations and plans of learners, working as part of the EdStart teaching staff

Required Skills & Experience

  • A degree in English or a related subject, with PGCE or equivalent
  • At least 2 years’ experience in teaching English preferably to KS3 and KS4 students
  • Strong ability to differentiate teaching methods to meet the needs of students with a range of academic and emotional challenges.
  • A passion for working with students with SEN and SEMH, and a commitment to their academic, emotional, and social development.
  • Experience using behaviour management strategies to support students with challenging behaviours.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage students, parents, and colleagues in a constructive and supportive manner.
  • A patient, empathetic, and solutions-focused approach to teaching and supporting students.

Performance Expectations

  • Student Engagement: Create an engaging classroom environment where students feel supported and confident in tackling English challenges, regardless of their academic starting point.
  • Differentiated Learning: Use a variety of teaching methods and resources to accommodate the individual learning styles of students, ensuring each student can access and make progress in the English curriculum.
  • Assessment & Feedback: Regularly assess student understanding of English concepts, providing clear and actionable feedback to guide their improvement.
  • Behaviour Management: Consistently implement effective behaviour management strategies to ensure a positive, focused, and productive classroom environment.
  • Collaboration & Communication: Work collaboratively with colleagues, including SENCo and teaching assistants, to ensure the best outcomes for students. Maintain regular communication with parents and carers about their child’s progress and areas for support.
  • Professional Growth: Engage in ongoing professional development to stay informed of the best practices in teaching English to students with SEND and SEMH, and integrate these into your classroom practice.
