Wolverhampton, United Kingdom Aston Fisher Full time

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Design Team Leader will manage a number of NPI (New Product Introduction) teams through the whole product life cycle. The successful candidate will be an expert in product and systems design and definition processes and will have extensive experience in successfully managing multidisciplinary engineering teams in complex project environments.

The Design Team Leader will integrate efforts between engineering disciplines, programmes, manufacturing, supply chain and quality to ensure that the teams meet Customer and stakeholders requirements (safety, functional specifications, quality, cost, schedule).

Read on to find out what you will need to succeed in this position, including skills, qualifications, and experience.

Simply put, you make it as easy as possible for your Team to do their job, work better with cross functional teams by communicating the workload, expectations and way things should be done clearly so all involved can deliver their best work and be engaged in the projects they're working on.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the Design and Definition functional capability (including process, tools and people skills)
  • Responsible for the delivery of engineering milestones across projects and components (specially aerospace heat exchangers)
  • Load and capacity management
  • Planning of design activities
  • Risk management
  • Build, lead and develop a team of design engineers with the appropriate level of skills and experience to deliver the engineering design solutions
  • Provide technical leadership and direction to the team
  • Mentor, coach and train the team
  • Define objectives and support development plans
  • Lead design reviews
  • Supervise, check and validate design activities and deliverables through the product life cycle
  • Promote a culture of high performance and innovation
  • Responsible for defining and applying the adequate processes and methods for product design, and ensuring process compliance within the team, including:
  • Requirements management
  • Change management
  • Design optimization
  • Systems engineering
  • DFMEA
  • Expertise in CAD tools (NX), PLM (Teamcenter)
  • Robust Design, Tolerance Design, Design for Six Sigma
  • Design for manufacturing
  • Design validation
  • Model Based Definition
  • Knowledge management (lessons learnt, design guides)
  • Create a culture that promotes innovation and continuous improvement
  • Develop and deliver design capability road map and contribute to the Company’s product strategy
  • Contribute to Research and Development projects

This role is for you if:

  • You feel you've reached the ceiling at your current employer
  • No longer feel challenged or excited by the products and components your working on
  • Have achieved all you can but feel you have more to give and room to grow further
  • Are passionate for removing obstacles to success
  • An empathetic, driven and motivational leader - someone that people look up to, can turn to and rely on
  • Find it easy to support others when they're stuck with a problem, always seem to be the 'go-to' person for issues, are already in a management capacity, or unofficially 'running the show' and get your kicks from seeing people flourish

What to expect from us:

  • 25 days holiday + additional Christmas close (so 30 days holiday total).
  • Development, training and world class resources available to you
  • Potential for sponsorship for further academic learning, maybe you're considering an MBA?
  • Opportunity to be working at the forefront of current and future aerospace technologies
  • Opportunities to work overseas and if not, still further your career here in the UK while getting experience and exposure to International sites, working across borders with some of the biggest names in Aerospace

We do need a few things from you though:

  • Experience - CAD Design, NX Siemens would be perfect, but other's are okay too - ideally you've been there and been drawing components to an expert level for some time, now you sign off others drawings and could even be the overall technical authority for your team, department, site or region
  • Expertise in the design and definition process of complex products through the product life cycle
  • People Management experience is crucial - this comes in a variety of formats, so we're open to what this looks like, but overall, you need to be responsible for others in some capacity
  • We want to hire you to tell us what you think - so ideally you know what the best and great looks like in all areas.
