The ICO is the independent regulator of information rights, including Data Protection and Freedom of Information. In a data-driven world, they provide advice, guidance, and support to organisations enabling compliance with their obligations, as well as protecting individuals and their personal data. The ICO is an independent public body that since February 2023, sits within the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), having previously been sponsored by the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS).

The ICO are looking for a passionate and driven Head of Finance to lead the finance team through a period of structural change within the function. The post holder will have the full support of the Finance Director to implement new strategies and enact their vision for the team. The role will focus on driving value for money and galvanising the team whilst working closely with the Director of Finance to identify opportunities for continuous improvement, contribute to financial strategy and ensure efficient budgeting, all with the aim of enabling the Commissioner to fulfil their duties.
To be suitable for the post applicants must demonstrate:
- Strong team leadership, ensuring that there are clear expected standards of performance, that the team is motivated and empowered to achieve their objectives, and staff development is provided in an effective manner.
- Experience in financial management, analysis and reporting, including the oversight of budgets. Ensuring robust monitoring of financial performance through effective engagement with all budget holders, and the production of reports for internal and external stakeholders.
- Ensuring appropriate financial controls are in place, including effective cash flow monitoring and forecasting, particularly given the ICO’s multiple funding streams.
- Confidence in preparing annual statutory accounts in line with the Financial Reporting Manual (FReM) and leading teams through successful financial yearend audits.
- The ability to instigate and implement changes and, where appropriate, recommend more strategic changes to the Director of Finance.

It will allow you to see the direct impact of your work and the positive effect you can have on both the financial management of the ICO, and the working culture of the team. This role also offers a unique benefit of flexible working where use of flexi time can be converted into additional leave, up to a maximum of 26 additional days. Annual leave days commence at 25 days, with a further 3 days leave over the Christmas period. This combined with the Civil Service Pension Scheme (around 27.9% employer contribution), personalised hybrid working and access to training and development support makes the package on offer extremely attractive. Applicants must be fully qualified within a CCAB body and have extensive relevant experience.
The finance team are predominantly based in Wilmslow and so although flexible hybrid working is offered the ability to travel to Wilmslow is important.
