Role Overview

The payroll team manages the payroll for approximately 1,400 employees. This role ensures the prompt and precise processing of the payroll whilst adhering to all legislation and statutory reporting requirements. Working in close collaboration with the HR department, the Head of Payroll position also focuses on the ongoing enhancement of the payroll service and the satisfaction of its customers.


Responsibilities:

  • Accurate and Timely Production of Monthly Payroll
  • Accurate payments and provision of information to the pension schemes, HMRC, and other statutory bodies
  • Extract payroll data for import into the Finance System
  • Develop an effective working relationship with the payroll software provider (MHR)
  • Ensure timely application of software upgrades
  • Update the payroll system annually for National Living Wage increases and pay reviews
  • Lead system development to accommodate new processes or changes to employment benefits (e.g., pensions)
  • Ensure all monthly and annual returns (e.g., RTI, P11ds, PSA, Teachers’ Pensions MCR, EOYC) are accurate and submitted by deadlines, including instructing the Accounts team to settle liabilities
  • Ensure compliance with Auto Enrolment regulations and implement statutory changes as needed
  • Extract data for Gender Pay Gap reporting
  • Capture data and prepare calculations to meet Holiday Pay regulations
  • Gather data for and complete annual benchmarking surveys
  • Prepare data for annual renewals such as life insurance and income protection
  • Research, identify, and implement changes to statutory regulations, advising accordingly
  • Prepare statutory notes for annual accounts
  • Prepare monthly manpower and costing reports for schools
  • Generate business objects reports for Senior Leaders and Operational Leads to facilitate budgeting and decision making
  • Reconcile payroll balance sheet control accounts monthly
  • Collaborate with the HR Director/HR Teams on payroll-related matters
  • Work to ensure high customer service levels for all employees
  • Regularly review payroll processes to identify opportunities for streamlining and improvement
