Role requirements:
Hinkley highlights the critical need for expertise in API qualification, tunnelling experience, and SCL (Sprayed Concrete Lining) techniques.
These skills are essential for successfully managing and integrating the shaft liner secondary lining into the fabrication programme at the Hinkley Point C (HPC) site.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordination and Integration: Collaborate closely with the Construction Director to ensure the seamless integration of the shaft liner secondary lining into the fabrication process. A strong background in tunnelling and SCL methods is crucial to manage the complexities of this project element.
- API Qualification: Oversee the API qualification process, ensuring that all aspects of the project meet stringent quality and safety standards. Expertise in API qualification is essential to maintain the highest levels of engineering control and defect avoidance.
- Engineering Control and Defect Management: Maintain high engineering standards, with a focus on defect avoidance and zero defects at project completion. Experience in tunnelling and SCL techniques will be vital in achieving these goals.
- Progress Reporting: Regularly report on the progress and performance of integration activities, with an emphasis on the tunnelling and SCL phases, to the management team.
- Contractual and Technical Review: Identify and resolve ambiguities or shortcomings in contractual and technical documentation, particularly those related to tunnelling, SCL, and API qualifications.
- Resource Management: Ensure that the necessary resources (labor, subcontractors, plant, and materials) are available and used cost-effectively, adhering to safety, health, environment, and quality (SSHEQ) standards.
Special attention will be needed for resources related to tunnelling and SCL operations.
- Problem Solving: Identify and address issues, implementing corrective actions in collaboration with stakeholders, with a particular focus on challenges related to tunnelling and SCL techniques.
- Programme and Budget Development: Develop and monitor project programmes and budgets, taking action as necessary, especially in areas concerning tunnelling and API qualification processes.
Safety, Quality, and Environment:
- Safety Leadership: Champion safety in all activities, with a strong focus on the unique risks associated with tunnelling and SCL. Ensure compliance with legislation and conduct regular risk assessments and site inspections.
- Quality Assurance: Follow Balfour Beatty’s management systems and rigorously promote nuclear safety, with particular attention to quality assurance in tunnelling and API-qualified processes.
Personal Qualities and Experience:
- Qualifications: A qualification in Civil Engineering or Construction Management (ONC/HNC/Degree) with at least 10 years of relevant experience. Experience in tunnelling and SCL is mandatory, as these are key components of the project.
- API Qualification Experience: Demonstrated experience with API qualification processes is essential.
- Managerial and Technical Proficiency: Should be adept in managing complex projects with a focus on tunnelling and SCL techniques, and have the professional credibility to engage and inspire others.

This role is integral to the successful delivery of the Hinkley Marine Works project. The ideal candidate must bring significant experience in tunnelling, SCL techniques, and API qualification to ensure the project meets its safety, quality, and performance objectives.
