The Opportunity

This role provides an exciting opportunity to join a growing NHS organisation at the heart of the nations healthcare. Now approaching our 30th year, NHS Resolution is an Arms Length Body of the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC).

Each year we handle over £6bn of NHS compensation claims in England, and are dedicated to serving the best interests of patients, NHS staff and taxpayers. Increasingly our focus is on learning from harm as we wish to reduce future claims against the NHS, and support Trusts and GP practices in providing better care for patients and safer, more supportive environments for staff.

We are seeking an experienced clinician with exceptional communication skills who is able to engage widely and build on our constructive working partnerships across the health and care system.

The successful candidate will have strong analytical skills and the credibility to engage and influence on the wide range of clinical issues which lead to claims, and sound understanding of patient safety. You will lead a fantastic, multi-skilled and motivated team to deliver this work, including a number of clinical fellows who work hand in hand with our claims staff, our corporate teams and our panel law firms to deliver unique insights to the NHS. A track record of engaging and developing high performing teams is therefore also sought.

Main duties of the job

We are looking for an exceptional clinical leader to join us as Deputy Director of Safety & Learning.

This is a key senior leadership role for the organisation, that engages at senior level across the healthcare system, and a diverse range of stakeholders, to deliver NHSRs strategic aims and priorities related to safety and learning.

The post holder will be accountable to the Director of Safety and Learning and will be responsible for leading and delivering NHSRs contribution to improving patient safety, reducing harm and subsequent claims.

The post holder will lead the Safety & Learning service, and will line-manage the operational team leader (8C) and senior clinical fellow attached to the team.

The post-holder will provide strategic oversight of the Safety & Learning operational team; and lead on priority deliverables including the development of a new approach to streamlining recommendations in emergency medicine, establishing and chairing a newly formed Research Governance Group, and developing work to improve the measurement of impact across the Safety & Learning portfolio.

The Deputy Director of Safety & Learning will bring strong vision, leadership and communication skills to enhance the outward profile of the function within NHSR and the wider system, and is a key leadership role in building NHSRs contribution as a system leader in patient safety.
